Description
No one explodes one of the longest-held misconceptions of music history better than Steve Lukather and his band Toto. The dominant sound of the late ‘70s and ‘80s was not punk, but a slick, polished amalgam of rock and R&B first staked out on Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees. That album was shaped in large part by the founding members of Toto, who were emerging as the most in-demand elite session crew in LA, and further developed on the band’s self-titled multi-platinum debut. A string of massive hits followed for Toto while Lukather and bandmates David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and Steve Porcaro also served as creative linchpins on some of the most successful and influential records of the era, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

In this incisive memoir, Lukather tells the complete Toto story. He also lifts the lid on what went on behind the closed studio doors, shedding light on the unique creative processes of some of the most legendary names in music: from Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, and Elton John to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Roger Waters, and Aretha Franklin. Lukather’s extraordinary tale also encompasses the dark side of stardom and the American Dream. Frank, engaging, and often hilarious, The Gospel According to Luke is no ordinary rock memoir. It is the real thing.

Had a chance to read this. Have to say that Luke doesn't pull any punches. He goes into detail about his behavior (or, misbehavior) and the collapse of his two marriages. We get a better idea about the problems with Bobby Kimball and (first time out) Joseph Williams. I must say that this is a compelling bio and the shock of finding out his youngest child is autistic shows how this affects many families. A strong recommend!

I tried listening to the audiobook, narrated by Lukather himself, but eventually gave up. Some celebrities should realize that they may be good at what they do, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're good at narrating. Bear in mind that I'm Brazilian, but I think even native speakers may have a hard time understanding what he says at times. I had a similar problem with Roger Daltrey, who sounds like he's drooling all the time while he speaks. Some musicians have done excellent jobs narrating their own autobiographies: Carole King, Paul Stanley, John Fogerty, Carly Simon (I could do without the occasional background music, though), Guy Pratt, Phil Collins, Elton John ("Love is the Cure"). even Pete Townshend, with his nasal voice. But Steve Lukather was a disappointment. I'll give it another try some time later. I've decided to listen to Jimmy Webb's autobiography instead, which is also narrated by the author.

Even Steven Tyler's autobio was read by a voice actor. However, the voice actor they got (I don't remember his name) got Tyler's rhythms and prose perfectly. Tyler was very scattershot and stream of consciousness in his writing -- it wasn't linear.

I've heard a few Beatles-related audiobooks where the narrator does a perfect impersonation of John, Paul, George and Ringo. I think "Tune In" is one of them.

The guy who read Mick Fleetwood's autobio sounds so much like him that I forget it's not actually Mick.

I liked the book quite a bit, although I thought the chapters that preceded Toto's formation were pretty bland. I was surprised to read of his involvement with some artists that I really like but that I had no idea (or didn't remember) that he had worked with, such as Stevie Nicks, Cher and Olivia Newton-John (whose new autobiography I read immediately prior to this). Pleased that he writes favorably of all three.
