The word "Marvel" keeps getting used for comics characters, even giving a certain company its name.

I put down Mar-Vell because he was the first one whose stories I ever read. And because unlike most superheroes he got to have a life story with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

I liked what little I saw of Monica Rambeau.

The Golden Age Captain Marvel's place in history is secure, but personally I've never been fond of most Golden Age superhero comics.

I can at least feel sorry for Carol Danvers for the awful way she's been treated over the years.

Correct answer was Captain Marvel. I think he's one of the best creations in comics, ever. And also costumes. And also historical development of comics outside of New York. And I'm said to see his cool name go in the dustbin.

Roger Stern did great things with Monica Marvel. Dr. Druid is a bastard.

Jerry Ordway's Shazam was one of my son's favourites when he was little, and I also have fond memories of the series because I read it to him until he eventually read it to me. :)

I liked Gil Kane's Mar-Vell in its day, and I still think it's visually attractive, but the writing has not held up well:

But I'm not an especially big fan of any Captain Marvel, so I'll give my vote to that kooky "Split!" version.

I've never read Ordway's "Shazam." It looked good when I saw it. I've heard that it's one of the few comics in recent decades to use Captain Marvel that really seemed to get the character. It has been said that most modern writers tend to write him as "a sort of mildly retarded Superman."
