Gene Simmons Contributes to Ace Frehley’s Next Album
Kiss bassist Gene Simmons has revealed that he recently co-wrote two songs with former bandmate Ace Frehley for the latter’s next studio album.
“Literally two days ago I was with Ace,” Simmons told 92 KQRS. “He asked me to write for his next solo record. So I went over to his place, way out in the desert some place, and we wrote two things.”
There is no confirmed release date or title for Frehley’s apparently in-progress seventh studio album, which would be the follow up to 2014’s well-received Space Invader.
This will mark the first time Simmons and Frehley worked together on a record since 1998’s Psycho Circus, which was intended to be a studio reunion of the original Kiss lineup but wound up being a much more fractured effort.

(hennemusic) Ace Frehley is offering his first public comments on a recent songwriting session with former bandmate Gene Simmons on new material for the original KISS guitarist's next solo album.
Simmons first broke the news of the hookup at Frehley's home in Rancho Santa Fe, CA during an interview with a Minneapolis radio station, and now the guitarist is sharing details of the session.
"I called him up and I said, 'Gene, you wanna write a few songs?' He says, 'Sure.'," Frehley told Eddie Trunk on the June 30 edition of his SiriusXM radio program. "Because he had come to my show [in February] at the Saban Theater in Los Angeles with John 5, and that's when we kind of reconnected and bonded a little And I just shot him an e-mail and said, 'C'mon, let's write some songs together for my new record.' Next thing you know, he's down here and within three hours we had written two songs together, which was, like, a record, for me and him."
"We had a fantastic time," continued the guitarist. "He came down. We ate in the backyard while I was watering my palm trees. [Laughs] He was going to [my fiancée] Rachel, 'This is something new I've never seen before.' He's eating a sandwich and I'm watering a palm tree in my backyard. But it was a lot of fun.
"[We] just started jamming. We initially each picked up an acoustic guitar. I don't remember who came up with the beginning of the song. One guy plays one thing and then I play another thing. I think Gene actually came up with more ideas than I did and I just kind of complemented them. And then I started writing lyrics for a song title, which I don't wanna give away yet. And then we kind of took a break and then he started playing this bassline and he said, 'Ace, play these thee chords against it,' and within thirty minutes we had a second song. I was really pleased, and so was he."

It sounds like somebody was keeping Ace under control a bit more on this one - no 60 tracks of guitar (or whatever was on "Gengis Khan"), under 3 minutes, punchy chorus, to the point guitar solo. Sounds like Gene on some of the backing vocals. Me likey.

Gene Simmons Named Ace Frehley’s New Album ‘Spaceman’
Original Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley said his upcoming solo album would be called Spaceman after former bandmate Gene Simmons told him to use the name.
He was speaking at the 20th annual Indianapolis Kiss Fan Expo, which took place over the weekend. The guitarist also took part in jams with Eric Singer, Bruce Kulick, Bob Kulick and others.
During a Q&A session on May 12, Frehley explained that the LP title was discussed during one of Simmons’ recent Vault events. “I said to the audience, ‘What about calling my new album Forty Years Later, because it’s been 40 years since my first solo record, 1978," he said. "And Gene goes, ‘No. You should call it Spaceman.’ So I figured I’d go with it. That’s a nice soundbite. Someone says, ‘How come it’s called Spaceman?’ I go, ‘Gene Simmons wanted me to.’”
You can watch the interview above.
Frehley added that the follow-up to 2016’s cover set Origins Vol. 1 would arrive in “a couple of months” and that it included an instrumental track called "Quantum Flux." Along with recently released “Bronx Boy,” the album is likely to include the two songs Frehley co-wrote with Simmons in 2017 after they reconnected following years of acrimony. “It was the first time I have worked with him while I was sober, and it was a pleasure,” Frehley admitted.
Asked by a fan about his favorite Kiss memory, Frehley replied, “That’s easy – playing Madison Square Garden three nights in New York City [in December 1977]. You know, we always used to say, when we were playing smaller clubs, ‘Tonight we’re playing the Garden.’ That was our mindset. … When we did three nights, back-to-back – what was it, Friday, Saturday, Sunday – it was a pretty awesome feeling.”

Hot on the heels of two Billboard Top 20 albums since his 2014 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, founding KISS guitarist and NY Times best-selling author ACE FREHLEY returns with the physical debut of “Bronx Boy,” the first song from an all-new, untitled full-length solo LP to be released this summer. Says Rolling Stone of this lead teaser track: “The gritty first single from his upcoming eighth studio album, (finds Frehley) snarling over a raw hard rock riff and squealing guitar solos.” Released as a limited edition, 5000 unit colored vinyl edition, “Bronx Boy” will be a highly sought after item for Ace and KISS collectors worldwide! ACK!

Ace Frehley Announces Details for ‘Spaceman’ LP
Ace Frehley is set to deliver a new album titled Spaceman on Oct. 19. The news of the record was accompanied by the release of its second single, "Rockin' With the Boys."
According to a press release, the song's origin dates back to his days with Kiss in the '70s. You can listen to it above. A complete track listing is also attached.
Spaceman, which contains eight originals and a cover of the Eddie Money hit "I Wanna Go Back," continues a decade of productivity for Frehley that, in recent years, has seen the release of a record of all-new material (2014's acclaimed Space Invader) and a tribute to some of his heroes (2016's Origins, Vol. 1).
Spaceman features reunion of sorts with his former Kiss bandmate Gene Simmons, who co-wrote the opener "Without You I'm Nothing." He also played bass on that track and "Your Wish Is My Command." Simmons, who named Spaceman, brought Frehley to perform with him at a Vault Experience event in Los Angeles earlier this year. They'll be touring Australia together beginning later this month.
In addition to those dates, Frehley is on the road in the U.S. until Aug. 18. After a few Tokyo shows in September, he'll be back on American stages, first on the Kiss Kruise VIII followed by three shows in Florida. You can also see his concert calendar below.

Are you planning more as it gets closer to the release date?
I'm on a wait and see basis.
I'm glad Ace is coming out with another album, but I don't get the fact that he has to do a cover on every album. And his choices in some cases are baffling.

I haven't heard this new album yet, but I like Ace's covers. I mean, his biggest solo hit was a great cover, "New York Groove". He did a nice job on the Stones' "2,000 Man" from Dynasty. "Do Ya" from Trouble Walkin' and Anomaly's "Fox on the Run" were solid. Generally, I think his covers are better than his song-writing, which can sometimes be generic.
