Nice overview of The Fall, except for the inclusion of a few clunkers, which I suppose makes it all the more representative of a Fall compilation.
Nothing really new here for a typical Fall fan (if there is such a thing), as there do not appear to be any different or singles mixes included in the tracklist. What is included here, however, is a fantastic cross-section of the many phases of The Fall, and the brilliance of Mark E Smith.
Just a few weeks ago, I was listening again to the 2004 comp
50,000 Fall Fans Can’t Be Wrong (subtitled "
39 Golden Greats"), and I was struck as always by the sheer diversity of their catalog, and it made me reach for several of the individual albums for further listening.
This new compilation contains every song on
50KFFCBW, except in typical Fall fashion it drops two from the original lineup, "Crop-Dust" and "Green Eyed Loco-Man". On the plus side, nearly a dozen key tracks from the timeline covered by the previous comp are added, plus ten more from the years after 2004.
The cover art appears to be a pastiche of the old Elvis Presley "40 Golden Greats", furthering the theme of the previous comp.
Somebody once said "Many bands may sound like The Fall, but The Fall sound like no one else", and it is still true to this day.
