This is probably the one piece of Russ' work that I looked at the most over the years:

Rest easily, Russ.

The inclusion of Russ Heath's "Plastic Sam!" was a pleasant surprise in the already-awesome MAD Artist's Edition:

.
Sam's face the last panel in this sequence is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Rest easily, Russ.

I can't say how many times in my life I've seen that image, and never even thought about who the artist might be. Now I know!

I never bought them, but I did buy the box of modern soldiers for $1.
Cheesy 2D slabs of men and vehicles you stuck on bases.

Yeah, but the box was a nice big authentic footlocker!

As did my brother. And another kid I knew. I heard him complain once at school that they were so flimsy they'd melt in a hot car.

Wonder what the Roman soldiers looked like? That ad by Heath is much better drawn than some of those other ads for similar products.

Mine weren't so bad. And not that thin. It's just hard to set up a good-looking battle scene
when all of the figures have to be facing the same direction. I mixed them in with my 3D army
men and used them mostly as background grunts and color. They also made good BB gun targets.
