If you're not nice
In a new interview with Billboard, Mick Fleetwood mentions that there's a "50-year package" on the horizon:
Quote:
What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming Fleetwood Mac tour?
We’re very excited. Obviously this is a huge change with the advent of Lindsey Buckingham not being a part of Fleetwood Mac. We all wish him well and all the rest of it. In truthful language, we just weren’t happy. And I’ll leave it at that in terms of the dynamic. And he’s going out on the road more or less the same time I think -- not in the same places, I hope (laughs). So we’re with Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and Neil Finn from Crowded House -- both really credible gentleman and really talented. We are a week into rehearsals and it’s going really well and we’re looking forward, in true Fleetwood Mac style. If you know anything about the history of this band, it’s sort of peppered with this type of dramatic stuff. It’s a strange band really. It’s ironic that we have a 50-year package coming out with all the old blues stuff with Peter Green, all the incarnations of Fleetwood Mac, which was not of course planned. But that’s what we’re feeling, especially myself and John, having been in Fleetwood Mac for 55 years. So it’s exciting, totally challenging in the whole creative part of it, and we’re really loving it. We’re just looking at a whole 18 months on-and-off of trekking around the world like we normally do and having it be fun.

Hmm, I'd just want stuff from the beginning up to the last album before Buckingham and Nicks joined. Sure, there's SOME overlap as far as what percentage of fans love both eras (myself included), but I don't need ANY more material from 1975-on. That period is well-represented, the era from "Then Play On" through "Heroes" is woefully underserved.

I wonder what the rationale was for the way The Chain box set was compiled. Non-chronological, with the Buckingham Nicks version of the band represented on the first three discs, with the last disc devoted to the pre-1975 incarnations of the band.

This sounds more like a 50th anniversary 3 CD collection, which have become the norm for these bands with their 40th and 50th anniversaries.
Deep Purple, The Hollies, Foreigner, Kiss, The Who, Genesis, the Stones and others have done them and some of them have been very well done and others pretty half-assed.

The box set that came out in 1992 covers most of the stuff I'd want, as weirdly compiled as it was.
It does have decent sound and did give us single mixes on CD for the first time. So it has its merits.
I still have that box also.
A great set to be sure - my favorite FM CD is the Japanese SHM version of English Rose, still my favorite Mac CD, followed close behind is the Boston Tea Party 3 disc collection on Snapper. Boy does that set cook......such intensity!

The Blue Horizon box plus the Then Play On remaster is all I need for the Peter Green years, the only thing I could use is a decent sounding compilation of the Welch/Kirwan years. I can guarantee this new set will not be the solution unless it is a mega box with all albums remastered. The price would be astronomical however.

Blu-spec is 16 bit. "24 bit" cd's is a marketing SCAM. CD can only reproduce 16 bits. At best, it likely means someone did a 24 bit archival transfer & neglects to mention that they downsampled to 16 bit for cd (which will usually sound slightly worse than a recording originally in 16 bit). (2 exceptions: HDCD kind of does 20 bit with a hardware decoder; & it is rumored that MQA with the right hardware can do a "lossy 24 bit"; whatever that means). I'm a bit frightened by ""lossy" 24 bit..... Anyone remember DCC Tape or Sony Mini Discs? Funny that the audiophile community had a FIT over those 16 bit lossy formats, but I haven't heard a similar outcry re: MQA. I'm also not sure yet how accurate the MQA claim is.
The basic physical standards of cd do limit it to 16 bit.

Is the SHM English Rose a new mastering or strictly a "technological advance".
eelkiller, I need to clarify (my mistake ) - this is a Blu-spec CD 2, issued in 2013.
The only other English Rose version that I've seen is from Japan in 1991.
The newer version sounds much better to my ears....
Who knows? - in 1991 might even have been 16 bit vs. 20 bit...or even 24 bit in 2013.
I keep my Blu-spec and SHM cds together in my Can-Am storage so I mistakenly thought it was SHM...still the best sounding version though.
No notes in the Blu-spec 2 on any remastering however, nor in the 1991 version....
Okay, thanks for the clarification, sounds like they did "touch it up". I have never seen a copy of the version you own in the stores but found it on Discogs.
