Cannot sleep again
I must try to worry less
In sleep there is peace

Mist covers the pond
The frogs laugh maniacally
Daybreak is hidden

As I watch the pond
A squeak beside me startles
Two squirrels scrambling

A rooster crowing
The hoot of a distant owl
Winds down the night shift

During a session at the library conference we were given an envelope of odds and ends of craft supplies and invited to create something. I have too many thumbs to craft worth anything, but my package contained a coffee filter, a Q-tip swab, and a bit of ribbon. I cut the filter into a long strip, composed and wrote a haiku on it, and used the Q-tip and ribbon to roll and tie it up like a scroll.

Morning sun shining
Quiet over Bath House Row
Small birds taking flight

That evening, the conference now over, I was up in northern Arkansas at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. They had an exhibit called "A Walk in the Woods." Attendees were invited to take sheets of paper and pencils they had handy, draw or write their impressions of the exhibit, and post it on a bulletin board nearby. The exhibit reminded me of an encounter a while back at our local park. Since I can't draw, I decided to write about it:

On a forest trail
A startled fox face-to-face
Then alone again

The exhibit's interpretive material was bilingual. That made me wonder whether I might be able to compose a haiku in Spanish. I came up with this:

En el sendero
Comida del corazon
Arboles y sol

Or in English (adapted to fit the haiku meter):

On the forest trail
I may find food for the heart
In trees and sunlight

I left all three haiku posted on the bulletin board. It beats me what anybody will make of them. Will others realize that they're supposed to be haiku? Will they even be able to make out my awful handwriting? They aren't very good haiku, really, but they were what I could come up with on short notice.

Thank you. I don't think the fox was as startled that morning as I was, though!

Bright greens and other colors
The rain's gift to us

While composing the above, I wondered once again what it must be like to have full color vision, if partial color vision can be this wonderful.

Then I recalled an article by a woman who, like me, has defective color vision. She said that she consoles herself sometimes by imagining that she can see colors that are not like the ones that everybody else sees.
