This is an interesting article by Alex Toth on the misunderstood greatness of Jesse Marsh from a comics/animation magazine called Panels. Marsh drew the Tarzan comic for Dell/Gold Key from 1947 until Russ Manning took over in 1965.

I wonder who that popular, pompous colleague Alex refers to on the last page?

I have several of his Dell books, and I like Marsh's work.

I like his compositions but am not a fan of his drawing at all.

I like everything about his artwork except his Tarzan face and figure. Weird, the rest of the cast looks great.

I'd never even heard of him!

I like the look of his stuff.

I have some early Flash Gordon comics by Marsh, too.

I think I have a book with some of his John Carter stuff somewhere, but I'd completely forgotten his name!

This is kinda cool. I thought I was the only one on Imwan to like him.

Ah, brain fart. Sorry. I meant his John Carter stuff, not Flash Gordon.
I'm a fake fan: all those Gordons and Rogers and Carters just sort of blend together for me.

"Keeping up with the Carterdashians". It's a first-world issue, for sure.

I find the art very crude and unattractive, but thanks for posting the Alex Toth essay, which I found interesting to read. Here's some original art at very high-res sizes --

I love the Marsh Tarzan. The art is decent, especially when he draws panoramic scenes (figures can be a little stiff). The stories were all short, but felt connected by the way it was written, with little references peppered into each of them to past adventures and future plans.

There's something appealing about the roughness of it. I like it a lot, even though it looks kind of 'unfinished'.

If you have a spare $20 laying around, Dark Horse published an inexpensive collection of Jesse's Tarzan work.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1506702244/?tag=imwan-20

It reprints Tarzan's two Four Color Comics appearances plus the first 16 issues of the Dell series. At a whopping 720 pages, that's quite the bargain.

That is a rather good bargain...but Amazon USA won't ship to Australia now there's an Amazon Australia and everything is idiotically expensive here, etc.

Still, it's a heck of a good bargain.
