Description
This is the first posthumous release from Tom Petty and is a career-spanning box set that focuses on Petty as a great songwriter. The compilation includes 8 unreleased songs plus many of Petty’s hits, usually as alternate or live versions. The set also includes some of his lesser known songs – especially from the WB period (1995 onwards). There are songs from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tom Petty solo and Mudcrutch. There are 60 songs on the 4-disc version: 8 of these tracks are completely unreleased songs, 33 are previously unreleased versions (i.e. a total of 41 tracks are unreleased or rare) and the other 19 tracks are taken from Tom’s album catalog. The 4 discs are sequenced chronologically, although there are some exceptions – mainly for live recordings.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Announce Posthumous Box Set ‘An American Treasure’

Tom Petty‘s family and former collaborators compiled a four-CD box set of previously unreleased material by Petty and the Heartbreakers, for release on September 28th, SiriusXM announced. The release, called An American Treasure, marks the first posthumous album of Petty material since his death in October. The SiriusXM broadcast debuted a clip from one of the unreleased songs from 1982 called “Keep a Little Soul.”

An American Treasure will contain previously unreleased studio recordings, live recordings, deep cuts and alternate versions of popular Petty songs, according to SiriusXM. The collection will encompass 60 tracks in total. Petty’s daughter Adria and his wife Dana helped select the material along with former Heartbreakers Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell and “longtime studio collaborator” Ryan Ulyate. A less expensive two-CD set will also be available for purchase.

Petty was as prolific as he was talented. During the Eighties and Nineties, he released albums at a rapid pace. His studio productivity dipped slightly in the new millennium, when he put out an album roughly every four years. The last album Petty released under his own name was 2014’s Hypnotic Eye. He also contributed to 2016’s Mudcrutch 2 with members of his pre-Heartbreakers band.

Petty was found unconscious at his home in Malibu on October 2, 2017. He was taken to the hospital and put temporarily on life support. He died hours later.

In January, a medical examiner ruled that the singer died of an accidental overdose. Petty had been prescribed drugs to treat emphysema, knee issues and a fractured hip, according to a statement from his family. “On the day he died, he was informed his hip had graduated to a full-on break,” Dana and Adria wrote. “It is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his overuse of medication.”

I'm maybe on this one. I'm a pretty big fan, & I'm already catalog + lots of video concerts (i.e. how much do I need). There are several TP video shows i own & still haven't watched.

I am really looking forward to this, though as always with these boxes there are questions. Mainly- why add 18 (by my quick count) tracks previously released on albums? If they just released the alternate/unreleased/live tracks they would fill three CDs and avoid duplication. Oh well, I guess the ratio of new-to-us as opposed to already-in-our-collections is higher than usual for these sets..

At least the price should be reasonable, based on previous box sets like Playback and The Live Anthology.

Here's the first sample from the box set, "Keep A Little Soul." Good stuff.

I’m so in on this box set, but the one disappointment is the 18 album cuts. No need for those. Anyone purchasing this set already owns those tracks. There should have been more alternates, live tracks, b-sides, and outtakes in their place.

Also wondering if the Wildflowers deluxe edition is going to still see the light of day. I think that was supposed to come out later this year, or next year. This set only includes a couple of Wildflowers outtakes, so the deluxe edition should still be mostly intact.

I will be purchasing this as well, but I'm still waiting for a complete albums box on CD.

Bump: I've added the full packshot for the 4CD box set to Linda's opening post along with the tracklist information that Jklwire brought us.

There is more than enough stuff for me to purchase. Having said that, there is STILL no version of I Fought The Law/Route 66 that isn't on cd legitimately (it was on an EP of "Listen To Your Heart")

Still no "Girl On LSD?. I've never heard it, but it was a single b-side & a late friend who was a TP fanatic's favorite.

November 2019 will be 25 years since the original release of Wallflowers. I'd bet on that deluxe ...All the Rest seeing the light of day next year.

I know it's silly, but I really like seeing those old style Reprise labels on the discs.

Note that there is also a super deluxe version. Same 60 songs so there is no additional music. But the super deluxe contains an expanded hardbound book, a lithograph and reproduction handwritten lyrics to four songs.

I'll be in depending on price.

I look at the 18 songs as a comp and the other 3 discs with the rare stuff.

Not a dealbreaker.

Or a heartbreaker.

So far the Super Deluxe Edition of the box is exclusive to Petty's website and costs $149.99, which is $100 more than the Deluxe Edition box in the first post. For the additional $100, the Super Deluxe box comes with the paper extras that Joseph mentioned and also a digital copy of the audio contents (but it doesn't say what resolution).
