Quote: Prince estate, Sony Ink Distribution Deal for 35 Previously Released Albums Legacy Recordings will make 19 records, originally issued between 1995 and 2010, available this year
By Jon Blistein 8 hours ago
Starting this year, Legacy will be allowed to make available 19 Prince albums originally issued between 1995 and 2010. These include The Gold Experience, Emancipation, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, The Rainbow Children, Musicology and Planet Earth. Legacy has yet to announce the exact date these albums will be made available.
As part of the deal, Legacy will also be able to distribute other post-1995 Prince material such as previously released singles, B-sides, remixes, non-album tracks, live recordings and music videos. Additional albums Prince released in 2014 and 2015 will be distributed at a later date.
To cap off the deal, Legacy has also secured the distribution rights to 12 Prince albums originally released between 1978 and 1996, though the label will have to wait until 2021 to make those available. This portion of Prince's catalog includes classics such as his 1979 self-titled effort, Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Sign 'O' The Times and Lovesexy. However, Legacy will not own the distribution rights to Prince's soundtrack albums like Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon.
Along with inking a deal for Prince's back catalog, the late musician's estate has a number of projects in the works that will feature material from his storied vault. On September 21st, they'll release a record of previously unreleased home recordings, Piano and a Microphone 1983, and another new album of unreleased material is set to arrive next year as part of a deal with Tidal. An exact release date and title for that project have yet to be announced https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news ... ms-w522089

I'm mostly interested in unreleased & live. I really don't like Prince 's music from 1995-2010.

I am hoping it will include some of the albums only available through his website during this period. They will need to do an awesome job on remastering and including additional tracks for me to be repurchase the 95-2010 releases. I would like to see live releases from each of his tours though. (A little underwhelmed by the "Piano And A Microphone 1983" - I thought it was going to be a live release of the last tour (till I read 1983).

There were some albums in there that were never released in a physical format (The Chocolate Invasion, The Slaughterhouse, etc). If those are issued on CD they are an absolute no-brainer purchase for me. I'll have to count up all the 1995-2010 albums and figure out what titles they will be. Hopefully not vinyl only, which I fear could be the case.

I'm assuming that "Chaos and Disorder" and "The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale" will not be part of this since they were Warner Bros. releases...and am guessing that's a really safe assumption.
1. The Gold Experience (1995) 2. Emancipation (1996) 3. Crystal Ball (1998) 4. The Truth (1998) - originally issued with Crystal Ball 5. Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (1999) 6. Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic (2001) 7. The Rainbow Children (2001) 8. One Night Alone...(2002) 9. One Night Alone...Live! (plus the Aftershow) (2002) 10. Xpectation (2003) 11. N.E.W.S (2003) 12. C-Note (2004) 13. Musicology (2004) 14. The Chocolate Invasion (2004) 15. The Slaughterhouse (2004) 16. 3121 (2006) 17. Planet Earth (2007) 18. Indigo Nights (2008) 19. Lotusflow3r (2009) 20. MPLSound (2009) - maybe Lotusflow3r and MPLSound packaged together as was originally done? 21. 20Ten (2010)
Let me know if I missed any? I think that's it from 1995-2010 minus the Warner Bros releases.
I'm pretty excited about this because it appears The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse will receive an official release on a physical format (hopefully not vinyl only!!!). Obviously there is the 19 versus 21 discrepancy. Very possible that Indigo Nights won't be a part of this since it was just a live disc packed inside a coffee book which makes it's standing as an official album somewhat questionable. Take that out and that knocks the number down to 20. After that I'd guess that Lotusflow3r and MPLSound get packed together which would bring it down to 19. Also would point out that Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic was just a remix album, if that and Indigo Nights doesn't get reissued then Lotusflow3r and MPLSound could be sold separately and the number is 19. Pretty cool that this stuff is all getting back in print. Great day for Prince fans. Just to beat that dead horse one more time, I sure hope that this reissue series will not be vinyl only.

Damn, this 1995-2010 news should get it's own thread in the vault forum. Could Linda or a moderator please fix this?
Strangely enough I am currently making a run through what I have of the Prince catalog and am up to Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. Not a fan of that record but will likely really enjoy listening to it tonight with this wonderful news!!!!
In addition to The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse, the one Prince album that I never got but would now really like to have is the One Night Alone...Live! album with The Aftershow disc included. As I understand it, the main live album is nothing to get that excited over but The Aftershow disc is just insanely good.

Chris had actually posted this as a separate thread and I merged it into the Piano And A Microphone 1983 topic, under the impression that there was more interest in the unreleased material mentioned in the article than in the straight reissues. If you guys want a separate thread, here you go.

Truth maybe wrapped into Crystal Ball? Was Truth ever a stand alone release? Forgot about One Night Alone...always regretted not getting.

What about the albums credited to New Power Generation? They are always forgotten. To me they are just as much a part of his catalog. "Exodus", "Goldnigga" and "NewPower Soul" could all use reissues. His discography is a real mess.

what about the madhouse albums? Forgot the Madhouse albums, those should be included as well. And I am with you- if there aren't bonus tracks, there's no reason for me to buy these again (well, unless Sony gets Vic Anesini to remaster them... I could be tempted then...). But it's still nice to have this stuff available for those who missed them first time out. A lot of these have been out of print for a while, and some were barely in print in the first place.

Will be interesting to see whether there will be physical releases outside of vinyl.

Did I read the info too quickly? Couple of comments fearing vinyl only...did not see anything re vinyl one way or other. Concern would be if they bloated the releases to deluxe packages that force vinyl.

No, just being mindful that things seem to be trending toward streaming and vinyl these days, especially given the number of titles and the fact that the most widely popular albums are excluded until at least 2021.

Jay wrote: Will be interesting to see whether there will be physical releases outside of vinyl. I don't see anything in the story that specifies vinyl releases are coming. Am I missing something? It's pretty light on specifics. We may not get any physical releases, just downloads. Or nothing much at all. Remember Sony's deal with Van Morrison a few years back? We were promised Legacy editions and barebones reissues of much of his catalog, but other than an expanded "Too Late to Stop Now", a Them set, a Bang years set, and an Essential comp, I don't think anything else has been released. Two years ago Capitol Records signed a deal with the Bee Gees, stating at the time: “The Bee Gees catalogue is one of the most esteemed and important bodies of work in the history of recorded music, and we are brimming with ideas that will remind fans of its brilliance and further the band’s legacy by introducing their music to new audiences. All of us at the company are honored that The Bee Gees have chosen Capitol as their new home.” All they've done since is reissue the "Ultimate Bee Gees" and a new comp, "Timeless:All-Time Greatest Hits". The big labels seem lost these days. Anyway, sorry about the digressive rant, I really was just not seeing where the story promised vinyl was coming. Then I fell apart.

I would also prefer vinyl-less CD releases. But I whined about that already in the Doors "Waiting for the Sun" thread.

I'm also hoping The Family and Vanity 6 albums see eventual re-release.

Prince lost me after he changed his name to The Artist, so I'll be patiently waiting for his run of Warner Brothers albums that precede these.

Since this is being done by Sony Legacy, I'm sure there will be CD editions of everything. How plain or froofy these editions will be remains to be seen.
