For me, it's Jack Kirby and Stan Lee on top -- as good as it was, I don't get people who say Simonson's run is better. He created Beta Ray Bill, but Stan and Jack created the whole foundation... and contrary to the thoughts of people who haven't read any mythology, there's a whole lot there they created on their own.

Next it's Simonson, then Frenz/DeFalco, then Romita/Jurgens, and then Buscema's stuff. I get why people like it, but I've been highly underwhelmed with Jason Aaron's run on Thor. He almost seems like a different character than the one done by the previous characters -- he's brought a lot of darkness and cynicism to the world of Thor, from what I've read. And it seems to be successful, so nothing against the guy, but it's just not for me.

I've been reading Bronze Age Superman, BTW, and many of the issues have a "Fabulous World of Krypton" back-up in them that just oozes "Tales of Asgard".





In fact, I've always seen Thor as Marvel's Superman, albeit a magic / mythic analogue.

I went with Simonson. Uncle Walt made pretty good use of Norse Mythology, and he made stories that read pretty well.

Aside from the obvious 2, I went with the Roy Thomas run. No particular reason, as I haven't read much of it, but I still prefer Roy's writing style to the others listed.

And part of the argument people make for Simonson over Lee / Kirby is that it took time for the Lee / Kirby run to find it's footing. The decision to move away from Don Blake as wielder of Thor's power to Don Blake as secret identify for Thor was big, as was expanding it to both the rest of the Thor mythos and Tales of Asgard took it to another level.

For good or ill, Uncle Walt was able to hit the ground running, and had the great Beta Ray Bill saga. Oh, and gave us the Frog of Thunder, so there's that. and of all of Marvel's superheroes, I think the Simonson Thor run is my favourite long run of a Marvel book that doesn't involve Lee, Kirby, or Ditko.

I get the Superman / Thor comparison, since Thor is probably the most powerful of Marvel's heroes, but in a lot of ways is easier to write. He's got more weaknesses than Superman (both physically and character wise), can do stories in lots of different fields, and when all else fails can fall back on the tales that have survived a 1000 years.

I've only really read Lee/Kirby and Simonson, so the choice was easy. Love the Simonson run and have the Omnibus.

Which weaknesses does Thor have physically that Superman doesn't?

He's not immune to vast quantities of Mead and World Serpent Venom.

Physically? He's not truly invulnerable; he can get beat up, and beat down It's very rare to see someone who can go toe to toe with Superman (Darkseid, Doomsday, Zod, Mongul, Mon-El) , but there's a fair number of Thor villains who can hang and bang with him (Giants, Asgardians, Hulk, Hercules; even some of the elves and dwarfs have been show to threaten him in combat). Maybe that's more about his villain cast, and not him, but the effect's the same. Thor losing a physical battle is more believable to me than Superman losing one.

How many Superman comics have you actually read? There's the guys you've listed and then Captain Marvel (SHAZAM), Maxima, Cyborg Superman, Parasite, Metallo, Eradicator, Ultraman, Silver Banshee, Lord Satanis, Amazo, Bizarro, etc. And then all the JLA villains that give him a run for the money.

Walt Simonson's run is my favourite, followed by Lee/Kirby.

3rd place was a hard choice between DeFalco/Frenz and Jurgens/Romita. I voted for the latter but regretted it immediately.

Drat. I missed that I could vote for three.
Otherwise that Thor The Mighty Avenger series by Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee is pure gold for me,
and the artwork from Olivier Coipel from about the same era is pretty outstanding.

To be honest, I haven't read many after the death of Superman, and did miss the Mirror Universe types. So I'll concede your point and move on,.
