Guess it was a well-established enough franchise that they figure it's worth trying again with a different approach. One dud usually won't kill off a well-established franchise, at least not permanently. Looks like we may even be seeing a new Fantastic Four movie in the next couple of years, and from what I've heard that 2015 movie should have been enough to kill anything!

The trailer looks pretty cool, though the online fan community seems mixed (a big chunk seems to hate anything that doesn't adhere to the TMNT material of the 80s and early 90s).

They look goofy. Which is not necessarily inappropriate, given the basic concept.
