[2018-06-01] The Quick "Mondo Deco (Expanded Edition)" (Real Gone)

Description
The Quick were the crucial link between the glam and punk eras in Los Angeles. Like The Runaways, they were brought to the Mercury label by local impresario Kim Fowley, but The Quick proved much less pliant than their distaff peers, resisting Fowley’s demands for “more boogie” on their 1976 debut album and instead pursuing a power pop sound influenced by Sparks (ex-Sparks guitarist Earle Mankey engineered). The Quick’s intricate harmonies, heavy guitar solos, sophisticated/sardonic lyrics and hooky melodies (both courtesy of songwriter Steven Hufsteter) deserved a much wider audience than they got; but Fowley, enraged by the band’s defiance of his vision, pulled the plug on all promotional support and Mondo Deco sank without a trace commercially. But the band (and their rabid following) were undeterred; after ceremoniously setting their Mercury contract on fire in front of the label offices, there were soon opening for The Damned with such luminaries as Johnny Rotten attending their shows. But, alas, The Quick could not navigate the shift in trends, undercut by band infighting, record label indifference, and punk rock Puritanism. Now, over 40 years later, we at Real Gone Music are very proud to present, for the first time ever on CD, Mondo Deco in an expanded edition that features the original album remastered by Bill Inglot, plus ten demos produced for the album, and two unreleased outtakes. Quick fan club president (and future Frontier Records owner) Lisa Fancher writes the liner notes, while Quick drummer (and future Salvation Army/Three O’Clock member) Danny Benair contributes track-by-track commentary (with photos from Fancher and Benair’s private archive as well). As Fancher puts it in the notes, The Quick were the right band, it was just the wrong time. Now their time has come.

Danny Benair just posted the following on his Facebook page

If anyone has interest in writing an article on my first band The Quick's Mondo Deco it is being reissued for the first time,and would love to have names of any writers.

WOW! This is outstanding news! I know our hearts were broken numerous times with talk of an reissue that never materialize but this time it maybe the one.

This one is probably getting a wide release as I was contacted by their publicist about it. He sent me a picture of the album cover with the teaser "more to come soon" .

Check out the updated details in the first post for the best possible news we could have hoped for. This is not only coming out in general release, it's going to be a Real Gone expanded remaster!

The 10 Mercury demos on this comp will be on the new release. But the big thrill is the CD debut of the 10 song debut album Mondo Deco.
There are also Elektra demos on the earlier release, but those aren't on the upcoming album.

Just in case anyone in Los Angeles saw my post and was interested in this, they have (thankfully) decided to make this a ticketed event.
With Mark Hamill doing the interviewing, and the distance from my job, I was concerned I might not get in.
Danny Wilde is now scheduled to attend, so I believe that makes four band members.
I hope my CD arrives in time so I can get it signed.

A little video someone shot. Mark Hamill didn't really have much to say after the introduction. Steven did much of the talking, as did Danny Benair.
Lots of great stories about recording in Brothers Studios, working with Kim Fowley, and playing around Los Angeles. Lasted about 90 minutes, and then they signed whatever we brought.
Because of demand, they added a late show, and I really wished I could have stayed. The one subject that wasn't really discussed was the break-up, but I understand they spoke of that in the second half.
