Steve Miller Children Of The Future (my fav SMB album) is out today in hi-res. I'd like to learn about the mastering before spending $'s if possible after the Culture Factory abominations. This one appears to be self released; the big 3 all have it.

Someone at the Hoffman board bought this Geff, he loves it!

I bought the Miller. It's a DR8; I am NOT pleased. Haven't played it yet. GOD I wish the "big 3" would post DR #'s.

Having played it on my main system, This may be the first time ever that I am going to keep a cd after buying a hi-res download. It's that loud. Good original recording, though. Too bad the bean counters once again f'd it up during mastering. Capitol/EMI seems to be the worst re: brickwalling classic rock. Not sure why, as they are now owned by Universal & many (though not all!) of their non EMI releases are acceptable.

That really is a monster price (A.S. is charging $18 each!). They're on sale & HDT is letting the sale price & the code stack.

Wait, did they tell you it's DR7 or did you have to waste a purchase to find out?

They never share that info. That's true for all the sites. I'm not the only one that's irritated about that.

If their tracklists are correct, then you're being offered bare-bones editions of the albums with no bonuses. For The Kinks' first decade, many -- if not most -- of their greatest recordings were not part of the original album tracklists. So maybe you didn't miss out on much of a deal, after all.

I really expected decent remasters as these were originally Warner. Looks like the hacks at Universal did them unfortunately. I just checked my Lola DE cd. The main album is only a DR9 there. :sigh:

I agree with you on the content, if I did end up with them I was planning on compiling a greatest hits in hi-res for actual listening.

There were 2 "new" Cars expanded H-R releases this week: Shake It Up & Heartbeat City. DR8 & DR9. The 192/24 Heartbeat City from the Cars 2014 Hi-res box is DR13. Shake It Up from the box is DR12. The labels so don't get that consumers of hi-res don't want brickwalled music. Have the labels done ANYTHING right with regards to music downloads from day 1?

I'm noticing lately that both Acoustic Sounds & Music Direct are really pushing vinyl & ignoring SACD (& in AS' case downloads also) in their promotional emails of the last couple months (though AS is still the 2nd largest source of legal hi-res dl's in the USA).

As MFSL is in bed with MD & APO is in bed with AS I wonder if they believe digital hi-res is a declining market (both physical discs & legal dl's)? That. Would. Suck.

There's also quite a trend for 24 bit to go 44/24 these days. Conversely, Blue Coast's survey (which I posted, shows Hi-res Downloads, CD, & SACD as being more popular than vinyl.

There is pressure against downloads from the labels, and encouragement for vinyl and of course streaming. Vinyl is a huge markup for them, streaming removes most concerns about piracy. Buying downloads outright (in any resolution) is being squeezed from both ends.

You may be right, but the labels are still providing the downloads.

Well, I am a convert, at least for special albums, or those that need a sonic upgrade. I made my first purchase recently from HDtracks; Jackson Browne's Late For The Sky 96/24. It's superb!! I have also added Fleetwood Mac's recent Fleetwood Mac (Deluxe Edition) 96/24 and CSN&Y's Déjà vu 96/24. Again, they're great!! Thanks, Geff, for pushing this old fart into your hallowed world of Hi-Res Legal Downloads!! It's worth noting that HDtracks has many sales that make the purchases more affordable.

Banzai, welcome to the club! If you get the chance, check out the first hi-res (2013? 2014?) master of the original Fleetwood Mac album; it's way better than the DE as far as the main album goes! And I agree, that Jackson Browne is awesome! Hold On Hold in hr is currently oop, but they did a good job on it also. Almost anything Warner mastered in 2013 or 2014 tends to be good.

The other stores worth checking (imo) are Acoustic Sounds & Pro Studio Masters. The biggest retailer in Europe Qobuz, has been saying all year that they plan to open in the USA this year. Other retailers to be aware of are 7 digital, Blue Coast & for a few items Bandcamp.

This is regarding the new Janis Ian remasters:

Geff R. wrote:
I've heard 2 of the hi-res versions. Slightly sibilant, but all in all a good remastering. The cd's are based on the same mastering, so they should also be nice.

As I mention above, at this point only 2 are out in the USA as hi-res. All the stores have them. All 5 are out on hi-res in Europe. USA residents can only buy the 3 Euro only ones with a combination of a VPN with European IP & a credit/debit card or Pay Pal account based in Europe. Hopefuly the other 3 will hit the USA soon, as imo Between the Lines & Stars are her best 2 albums.

I emailed Ian's website the other day about this. A management person wrote me back. They weren't aware of this, & they are not happy. They're going to be reaching out to Sony for an explanation.

I was just looking at this week's HDT list. For the last few weeks, I've noticed that probably 80%+ of the 24 bit releases only have a 44 or 48 sampling rate. While imo, the bit rate makes a bigger difference, it's like the record labels are just sabotaging themselves again (just like all the DR7 hi-res files). Will they ever get a clue (um....... probably not).

I just find it so frustrating because music mastered correctly from 88/24 & higher can sound so freakin' good.
