Description
Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his long and multi-faceted career, there stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of the past half-century. Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Nash burst on to the scene during the British Invasion with The Hollies before he formed the legendary supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash in 1968 with David Crosby and Stephen Stills. As Nash prepares to launch a European tour in July, Rhino looks back at some of his best-known recordings from the past 50 years in a new anthology featuring more than a dozen unreleased demos and mixes.

Over The Years... features 30 tracks and will be available on June 29 as a two-CD set. The anthology has been painstakingly curated by Nash and longtime associate Joel Bernstein and includes extensive credits and liner notes.

"It does my heart good to present my songs this way. I hope that listeners will enjoy hearing the demos of my songs - how my demos of 'Our House,' 'Teach Your Children,' and others turned into the records that have endured 'Over The Years,' how I started writing them, and how they became the now familiar recordings when they were released," said Nash.

Over The Years... highlights songs from the iconic CSN debut album ("Marrakesh Express") and its successor album Déjà Vu, for which Neil Young joined forces with CSN ("Our House" and "Teach Your Children") as well as songs from subsequent CSN albums ("Just A Song Before I Go" and "Wasted On The Way"). In addition, the collection highlights songs that Nash recorded for his 1971 solo debut, Songs For Beginners, including "Military Madness" and "Simple Man," and includes unreleased mixes for two other songs from that album: "Better Days" and "I Used To Be King." The most recent recording on the compilation is "Myself At Last" from Nash's 2016 solo album This Path Tonight.

Two tracks from his enduring albums with David Crosby ("Immigration Man" and "Wind On The Water") are also included in the collection.

Over The Years... includes 15 demo recordings, 12 of which have never been released. Standouts include the 1968 London demo of "Marrakesh Express," rejected by the Hollies and setting the stage for Nash's relocation to Los Angeles and the next chapter of his life. The set contains early versions of CSN classics like "Our House," "Wasted On The Way," "Pre-Road Downs," and "Teach Your Children." Other unreleased gems include: "I Miss You" and "You'll Never Be The Same" - both from Nash's 1974 solo album Wild Tales - and "Horses Through A Rainstorm," originally intended for Déjà Vu.

In addition to his July UK and European tour, Nash will continue to support Over The Years... with a Fall US tour beginning in Austin, TX on September 19.

kudos to graham nash for not putting anything on this that no one has ever heard.

sure there is a whole CD of demos, which, as geff said, i would like to hear, but at least i don't have to buy this to get one or two 'previously unreleased' songs.

as for the demos.......someday somewhere, maybe. and at $25 it is a little pricey for sure.

and for those of you that have no nash solo, that first disc is not bed, not bad at all. however, nary a tune form 'earth and sky', the nash solo effort that has still never been on CD in the U.S. it seems as though he has just abandoned that album and every song on it from his repertoire.

still hard believe that 'earth and sky' and the first crosby*nash album have never been released in the U. S. isn't it?

I found another internet source with more info. Immigration Man gets squeezed in between songs 2 and 3 in Linda's track listing, whereas Amazon has Military Madness listed twice. And sources are listed.

Note that the Marrakesh Express demo source is shown as London 1968. Could this dare to be a Hollies version, or Graham solo prior to leaving them?

I've moved Robin's more detailed tracklist all the way from Finland into the first post of our thread. :) (Thank you, Robin!)

i'm just guessing, but more likely it's the one from the 'demos' CD.

i am also guessing that the 'previously unreleased mix" of 'i used to be a king" is form the remixed 'songs for beginners" with the drums moved much more out front.

I posted this info on a Hollies forum, and Cameron (who made that mash-up of Marrakesh, the CSN demo mashed with The Hollies instrumental version) sez this:

Quote:
This is exciting, though I know for a fact that it won't be the Hollies' version of "Marrakesh Express", as Graham recorded his own demo tape complete with vocals to play to the Hollies. A brief section of this was included on a Graham Nash documentary about 15 years ago. That said, the CSN demo version was a nightmare to sync to the Hollies track as it was in the wrong key and featured a syncopated guitar strum that was very bass-heavy and difficult to remove without taking away from the vocal quality. It had to be removed as it didn't fit with the Hollies demo at all. So fingers crossed this new version will be a simpler demo and I definitely will have a go at creating a 'complete' Hollies version with this new track if it's suitable.

Rhino's official description (now in the first post) confirms what Robin was told:

Quote:
Standouts include the 1968 London demo of "Marrakesh Express," rejected by the Hollies and setting the stage for Nash's relocation to Los Angeles and the next chapter of his life.

The odds should be highly favorable that Graham's "presented to The Hollies" demo and their subsequent instrumental version would be of similar tempo and in the same key. So Cameron's future combined mash-up should work out really well. Looking forward to hearing both Nash's demo and Cameron's impending mash-up!

How about one more listen to Cameron's previous mash-up, using the CSN demo and The Hollies instrumental?

if this your first foray into solo graham nash, this isnot for you, but sadly, there is no other nash comp out there that would be better.

this would have been more interesting hasd they used just nash's solo stuff, or even the crosby*nash tunes that were his, the CSN and CSNY stuff just isn't necessary as i would guess most music fans already those songs.

i highly recommend all of his solo albums, as they all have something to offer. however, as i said earlier, 'earth and sky" is an import only, and i rarely, if ever, see any solo nash in the used bins.

I appreciate the work that went into getting this to sync up, but yeh, it doesn't sound like a Hollies recording. Fingers crossed that Cameron can get a good version out of the London '68 demo. It would cap off The Hollies' Graham Nash era beautifully, even as an outfake.

I have a question about ordering from the Amazon UK site. I am an Amazon USA customer and have prime. How do you go about ordering from the UK site? Do you have to sign up at the UK site or what is the ordering process? Thanks in advance.
