$25 for a documentary is over my budget today. I looked at the You Tube clip above; & there was almost no music. I suspect it is worth a watch, though.

Has this already aired on PBS, or is it upcoming?
edit: I see this is airing May 4: THE JAZZ AMBASSADORS (Friday, May 4,10-11 pm ET) The Cold War and civil rights collide in this remarkable story of music, diplomacy and race. Beginning in 1955, when America asked its greatest jazz artists to travel the world as cultural ambassadors, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and their racially diverse band members faced a painful dilemma: How could they represent a country that still practiced Jim Crow segregation? Leslie Odom, Jr. narrates.

While not at all what I expected, this was excellent. Though there are a number of short musical clips, this is much more a documentary dealing with racial politics. Very strong statement.
Per Amazon, the dvd is 90 minutes; the PBS presentation was just under an hour.
While I don't know what's in the missing 30 minutes; I would tend to recommend this more for folks interested in American racial politics of aprox 1955-65, then to jazz fans. It would be of interest to many jazz fans also, though.
Can't say more without violating the Ice policies.

Sorry I didn't post a reminder about this as I promised, we had a medical emergency last Friday and I totally forgot. All is well now, but I missed the show myself. Fortunately PBS tends to repeat these shows a lot. I am sure I'll stumble across it sooner or later.

Per the Ellington list, Amazon appears to be correct re: the dvd being aprox 35 minutes longer than the broadcast. There is a rumor that BBC may be broadcasting the full 90 minute version.
