I voted for the DP because I liked the characters more.
The X-Men was probably the superior series during the original Jack Kirby issues. But across the entirety of the Silver Age, I think The Doom Patrol held up better overall.

X-Men was pretty special from the debut of The Blob through the first Sentinels arc, but then kind of sucked until Neal Adams came along, IMO. Doom Patrol may not have been as good as those 14 consecutive issues of X-Men, but it was high quality throughout its entire run.

Ask nearly any comicbook fan who the original members of the X-Men are, and you'll get a fairly correct answer.
Ask again about Doom Patrol, and you'll get a decidedly less correct answer.
