https://www.oppodigital.com/farewell.aspx Farewell It has been 14 years since we established OPPO Digital in the United States, and with the support of our customers, technical partners, and movie/music studios, we produced many award-winning Hi-Fi audio products and universal disc players, spanning three generations from DVD, Blu-ray, to 4K UHD. As our latest 4K UHD players reach the pinnacle of their performance, it is time to say goodbye. We are proud to have made such well-regarded products and to have served the enthusiast community. Without our customers' suggestions, encouragement, and support, we could not have accomplished these achievements.
Though OPPO Digital will gradually stop manufacturing new products, existing products will continue to be supported, warranties will still be valid, and both in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair services will continue to be available. Firmware will continue to be maintained and updates released from time to time. Customers can rest assured that they will continue to receive the high quality service and support that they have come to expect from OPPO Digital. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to have developed such exciting products for our customers. It has been an honor. Best regards,
All of us at OPPO Digital
While this web board has never been a place where we talk about the hardware that plays our physical discs, the news that suddenly OPPO Digital has decided to slowly go out of business is big news in the audio/ video world. Arguably the best CD/DVD/Blu-ray 4K players in the world, the fact that consumers even videophiles are moving away from physical and completely into streaming has never been more apparent than this news. A very sad day for people who love their equipment as much as their discs.

NO.
The prices are going to go crazy on the collector's market. I strongly suggest that both audiophiles & videophiles who don't yet have an x.5 Oppo blu ray pick up the 205.

What is also scary that this is probably the end of the all things player....one that does all physical discs like CD/ SACD/ DVDA/ DVD/ Blu-ray/ and 4K Blu.

I'm pretty sure some of the megabucks hi end companies have equivalents. I've rarely looked beyond Oppo for financial reasons.
The big thing now for semi physical media files (rather than streaming) is USB DAC's (as part of a real stereo system) being driven by a pc. The problem with that (other than the lack of disc support) is pc motherboards tend to have rf noise as nature of the beast.
For files only I believe some of the $1k & up portable hi-res players are supposed to sound pretty good either plugged directly into a stereo or into an outboard dac.
Nonetheless, this. sucks.
If I had the money (I don't) I would pick up a 205 & also keep the 95; other than losing the ability to play burned SACD's, they're supposed to be a major upgrade from my 95.

No, no, no, no, no.
I suppose this means I'd better get the 4k model pretty darn soon. (I have the previous UDP-103) How sorry will I be if I don't? Are other brands in the neighborhood these days? Or approaching that neighborhood?
Has anyone here tried their planar headphones?

From an audio pov, the 205 is the 4k (I didn't know this). The x.5 is a HUGE upgrade audio wise from the x.03. I can't comment on the 4k part.

I have a UDP-205 player and the PM-1 headphones. I don't have a 4K TV (still have a plasma which I love and hope it never dies!) so I can't comment on that aspect. Video/audio with a regular Blu-ray is tremendous. Still am not crazy about using it as a CD player because when bouncing through tracks the player generally "fades in" or misses the first 1/2 of the track I'm bouncing too which is annoying (not sure if this got fixed with a firmware update...but to be honest I don't think it should have been put on the market with this flaw). The headphones are nice but IMO vastly overpriced. I think the sound tends to be relatively flat when compared to some of my other headphones. Strangely enough, I do think this aspect of the headphones make them better for listening to brickwalled CDs. But I think a person could get a much cheaper set of a "decent" brand of headphones, maybe a pair of Breyer Dynamics headphones for about 40% of the price and while it would be a step down, the step down would be well worth having the extra $700 in your pocket. Just my opinion.
Does this news officially kill the SACD format? Granted, it's been on life support for awhile but Mobile Fidelity and Audio Fidelity kept leaking a few out. Hard to see it continuing as Oppo seemed to be the go-to brand for so many of the SACD buyers.

Very sad news. I love my OPPO. I was going to get the new model for Christmas this year but may need to move this up before the stock diminishes. Best player I ever owned and I have had quite afew over the decades.

wow - he who hesitates....has been something I was planning to buy...when I read this thread I looked into but needed to get my taxes done (having just got married at the end of last year there were some unknowns). Well that was taken care of tonight and the unit (205) is no longer available via Oppo or Amazon. Damn.

so my previous post was about 5 a.m. local time.after post I did find a unit for approx 1500 at a website that is local to my area. I planned to call them today to see if I could ick up vs ship (hard to tell if retail). Anyway, busy day. At lunch I doublecheck and they had jacked the price to 2700. I may be kicking myself in the ass for never picking one up earlier - but who would have thought something released in late 2017 would suddenly be on the chopping block. Will be interested to see if Oppo "slowly stopping manufacturing" truly means they are done. OH well....

funny, as I type above I get the following from Oppo: Dan, The player is currently out of stock and there are no current plans on making additional UDP-205 players available for manufacturing, so it is likely that you will never see additional UDP-205 players available for purchase. Technically I still feel covered with my Denon 3109 that plays SACDs and DVDAs, basically everything but Blu-ray but there are good Blu ray players available from other manufacturers (like the Sony UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, yes it can handle SACD/DVDA)..

Unless you need 4k, the 95 & 105 are also good options. The 95's weakness' are a short gap between songs on flac files & it doesn't play native dsd/dsf. As far as I know with the lastest firmware the only significant weakness of the 105 is it doesn't play burned SACD's.

WTF?
This is something I always intended to buy, but hadn't yet because.... well, no reason, but mostly because I am happy with my old Adcom CD player. I do have a few SACD and DVDA discs and have never been able to play them. (I have a 2-channel system only - no surround. I play mostly vinyl, and scratchy 45s at that!)
One thing that turned me off a bit was that I wouldn't be using an Oppo for video at all (my TV is in a separate place from my audio system) and those feature would be "wasted". (And I would need to buy a mini video monitor to see the DVD menus.) Also, by the time I thought of getting one, a new model would come out - adding features but also dropping them.
So, now it seems that ship has sailed. Reminiscent of Technics stopping production of their turntables. (Now that those have been re-introduced at a much higher price, I would still like to get one but am procrastinating since I still like my Music Hall MMF 7.)
I really only care about the music anyway (OK, I like to collect the records and CDs too), so back to that.....

I'm seriously thinking about buying another remote control for my UDP-205 to have as a backup...just in case.
