I've actually seen all of these (including the 1924 Siegfried one).

Whoops. Guess not. Didn't see that newer Conan.

Best film(s) on that list are the Lord of the Rings films, but I don't consider Lord of the Rings to be sword and sorcery. By what I consider the genre to describe, it's Conan the Barbarian (1982).

I went with Dragonslayer, but Conan the Barbarian comes close. And Jay is right, the Lord of the Rings isn't sword and sorcery. It's the very definition of epic fantasy, the opposite of s&s.

Do Excalibur or Clash of the Titans count?

I misread Kull as Krull, prompting this confused musing: For me Dragonslayer and Krull balance perilously amid my favour. Both are entertaining as fuck, and though nothing in Krull equals the majesty of Ralph Richardson or the astounding of Vermithrax, Dragonslayer's story is not without shocks and surprises, but its unfolding is downright orderly compared Krull's overall insanity, which has the narrative logic of a Dungeons and Dragons campaign -- and Wikipedia tells me it was indeed developed as a D&D adaptation -- gives it the edge in entertainment value.

If that were the definition of the term, then it would be.

Both genres are part of the larger “fantasy” genre but “epic fantasy” and “sword and sorcery” are different subgenres.

Think of it like cop movies and Kung fu movies — both are action films, but someone who wants a movie like Enter the Dragon or Bloodsport won’t be satisfied with Lethal Weapon or Dirty Harry, and vice versa.

I agree with Jay on both these points :faint:

I know  my quibble was with the idea that they were 'opposites'

One's about saving the world. One's about personal stakes. There's more differences than that, but I'd say those two are the opposite of each other.

Disqualified because not really a musical.

The theatrical version, too. Man, that sanitized T.V. version really demonstrated how badly some films can be edited.

Good point. In that case, Mame. Or Fame. Whichever one rhymes better.
