I guess it's time to start a new football thread...

Quote:
Andrew Luck on Additional Surgery: “That is not an option... that ship has sailed”

Tuesday night the Indianapolis Colts had a town hall meeting hosted by Sports Illustrated’s own Peter King. King’s weekly Monday Morning Quarterback article is one of my must reads and he didn’t disappoint tonight asking great, well-formed questions and even going over his time by more than 30 minutes.

King conducted interviews with many members of the Colts and he managed to lock down a one-on-one with none other than Andrew Luck. Luck joined via video, as one would assume he is in California working with a throwing coach. King wasted no time asking the Bearded One how he was doing, he asked if Luck was throwing, if additional surgery is a possibility and Andrew Luck responded, showing emotion, I don’t know that I’ve seen him show for a long time.

He seems happy. He seems excited. This is is the full exchange about additional surgery from colts.com:

King: Is it unlikely, or are you unsure, whether any more surgery’s on the horizon?

    Luck:
“Oh, that is not an option for me right now. I feel very, very good about where I am. So that ship has sailed, in my mind, which is also a bit of a relief — I’m not going to lie.”

One thing that I can’t fully convey with the written word, is the way he sounded when he gave that answer. King went on to ask about Josh McDaniels, Frank Reich and his offense and how hard it has been for him to not play football for the past year. Luck’s answers to these questions were music to Colts fans ears.

Twitter is going to be aflutter with conspiracy theorists who cite the timing of this interview which just so happens to coincide with 2018 season ticket sales that begin in less than a week.

I get it.

If you want to blame the organization for “lying” about Luck, you’re going to point to this and claim that Jim Irsay needs to sell his tickets, but the thing is, Andrew Luck isn’t that good of an actor. He just isn’t. He isn’t in California taking acting classes, he’s rehabbing his throwing shoulder and the guy is almost giddy at the prospect of playing football again.

Another reason the Eagles were the best in the NFL.

They lost Wentz, Peters, Sproles, Hicks, Sturgis, Maragos for the whole season and now this revelation from Jeffery who played through agony and made spectacular plays all season long.

Jeff Dickerson
ESPN Staff Writer

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery will miss at least six months of training after undergoing surgery to repair a "full tear" in his right rotator cuff on Wednesday, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson.

The source added it is "very likely" Jeffrey will miss the preseason and is "unsure" about the regular season, "but the expectations are to be ready for Week 1."

Jeffery initially suffered the injury in training camp but opted to play through the discomfort.

Jeffery started all 16 regular-season games for Eagles, catching 57 passes for 789 yards and nine touchdowns.

In the postseason, Jeffery had 12 receptions for 219 yards and three touchdowns, including a memorable 34-yard scoring grab in Philadelphia's 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

Jeffery signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia last offseason but later received a four-year, $52 million extension from the Eagles in December.

Jeffery, 28, entered the league as a second-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears in 2012.

The Eagles had an amazing year; especially with all the injuries, which I still feel was a very legit excuse for the Seahawks mediocre season.

The Eagles surpassing the staggering amount of injuries is something I don't expect to see from any NFL team again in this lifetime.

Right? How many previous times did a backup QB go on to win the Super Bowl?

Ironically The Patriots when they won their first Super Bowl. Tom Brady started as the back up then took over during the season when Drew Bledsoe got hurt. Then Brady got hurt in the playoffs and Bledsoe stepped in for the AFC Championship and Brady came back in time for the Superbowl and lead the Pats to an upset win over the then powerhouse Rams.

I'll leave it up to you to decide who counts as the back up in the whole scenario.

It was actually covered during the Super Bowl. There were 5 QB's who won the SB who weren't the starter week 1:
Brady
Plunkett
Hostettler
Williams
someone else I can't remember.

and now Foles.

Terry Bradshaw. Joe Gilliam was the starter for the Steelers in week one of 1974.

Not as rare as people think, I will never forget that Jeff Hostettler season. Phil Simms should have been the guy that brought them in but he got crushed that season. Of course Hostettler never did have a great career after that.

As for Foles in the playoffs, only two QBs ever had better numbers with completion percentage at 72.6 %:

Montana
Marino

Foles also had a 115.7 QB rating which I think only two others bettered:

Flacco
Brees

As for the future, we keep hearing here that Wentz may be out until October-December, so no way Foles is leaving here.

But do they extend him?

If not, he walks away at the end of the year.

Tough, tough decision.

Also, I'm reading Jax would love to rid themselves and Bortles' $19 mil a year and sign Cousins.

If Cousins went to Jax, with that D, I could see that working out pretty well.

I still think Eli will eventually be in play especially if the Giants draft a QB at #2 (and they almost have to). Could Eli survive a season where things aren't going well and a Darnold is sitting on the sideline (and that's not even considering Davis Webb).

Eli to Jax, that makes sense.

Thing is Philly didn't just lose their QB, they lost a number of important players & still won the SB. That isn't supposed to happen. Very impressive.

You;re right Geff.

The Birds lost the would've-been MVP in Wentz, a 9-time All-Pro O-lineman in Peters, starting LB in Hicks, special teams ace/RB/punt return Sproles, special teams captain in Maragos and their K in Sturgis.

The only reasons the Eagles did what they did was the brilliant coaching/motivation of Pederson and the work GM Howie Roseman did, as well as the players stepping up to fill each position.

It does prove that injuries simply happen in the NFL, and you can't use it as an excuse.

But is it rare? Oh yes.

Well, guess we can't believe all we read!

Jaguars signed QB Blake Bortles to a new three-year, $54 million contract with $26 million guaranteed.

This comes after reports the Jaguars were exploring options to replace Bortles.

The extension locks Bortles up through 2020, suggesting Jacksonville thinks they can win with him in the short term. Bortles' his new deal is on the team-friendly side, placing him behind Ryan Tannehill in annual salary.

The Jaguars have a rising receiver tandem in Dede Westbrook and Keelan Cole, and are expected to franchise Allen Robinson, so Bortles should have an improved supporting cast going into 2018.

Yikes...

Former Dolphins and 49ers OL Jonathan Martin has been taken into police custody after posting a disturbing image on Instagram of a shotgun and ammunition, threatening "suicide" and/or "revenge".

Martin was the famous victim of "Bullygate" while with the Dolphins back in 2013.

In the photo he posted on Friday, Martin wrote, "When you're a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge."

In the photo, there was a shotgun and several rounds of shells lying on a bed, and Martin tagged former Dolphins teammates OG Richie Incognito and C Mike Pouncey. Martin also tagged two others, presumably from his old high school, while also tagging the #MiamiDolphins and #HarvardWestlake, his high school.

Harvard Westlake subsequently shut down its campus after seeing the image. Martin was then taken into custody shortly after. The 28-year-old hasn't played in the NFL since 2014 and clearly has some mental issues. Thankfully, it didn't turn ugly.

Happy for Bortles, good guy who finally proved himself and the Jags are a pretty good team that should be back on the hunt next season.
So that eliminates Eli from going there.
The intrigue continues.

Mike Jurecki of Arizona Sports does not expect the Cardinals to join the bidding for free agent Kirk Cousins.

Long one of the NFL's most reliable beat reporters, Jurecki expects the Cardinals to pass on Cousins and instead opt for two cheaper veteran quarterbacks to compete with a rookie, also noting Arizona "needs to get its O-Line figured out."

If the Cards are truly out on Cousins, the Jets, Broncos, Vikings, and Browns would be left as his likeliest destinations.

The Jaguars dropped out when they signed Blake Bortles to a new three-year, $54 million deal.

Odell Beckham (ankle) doesn't expect to play in any preseason games.

This looks to be injury related, but Beckham is a holdout threat in the final year of his contract.

The Giants will likely want to get Beckham preseason reps in their new offense if he's healthy, so this can change between now and training camp. Beckham will make $8.4 million if he plays 2018 under his fifth-year option.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Bills "were trying to get involved last year" in a trade for Martavis Bryant.

We assume this happened around the trade deadline when Bryant voiced his desire to leave Pittsburgh when he lost his starting job to JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Fowler believes teams came to the Steelers offering a fourth-rounder, but it wasn't enough in Pittsburgh's eyes. Fowler, however, does think a second- or high third-rounder could get the deal done this offseason.

Bryant's contract expires after 2018, and he isn't expected to accept a long-term deal with the Steelers due to his desire to be a No. 1 receiver.

That obviously isn't happening with the Steelers.

The Bryant rumors are being reported around here, according to the headlines. Haven't read the articles yet.

Watching an old episode of the HBO series Hard Knocks featuring the NY Jets (it also was a high point for this series). This is the fat Rex period and Mark Sanchez is the young upcoming QB. The big story that pre-season was the holdout by Revis. His replacement draft choice Kyle Wilson never amounted to much. We also see Joe McKnight struggle in camp and he never did have much of a NFL career. He unfortunately passes away a few years later in a road rage incident near where he grew up.

Another player they focus on is Vernon Gholston a defensive lineman that was one of those body freaks but not a real NFL player. Other than Revis, the Jets whiffed on a lot of their draft choices which killed the later Rex years.
*the draft of 2010 for instance was a complete bust with Kyle Wilson a first round pick, Vladimir Ducasse in the second, Joe McKnight in the 4th and John Connor in the 5th.

Back then they had Brian Schottenheimer as the OC. Turns out he was pretty good compared to what has followed him.
He is now the OC of the Seattle Seahawks.

Another cool thing about this preseason was the debut of Victor Cruz for the NY Giants in the preseason game at MetLife. He catches 3 TDs and opens a lot of eyes. When Rex runs off the field and greets Tom Coughlin at games end he remarks "Who is #3?" :D

Well, they can't keep everybody...

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent TE Trey Burton is "expected to leave Philly."

Rapoport suggested the interest wasn't there with the Eagles "stacked at tight end" and "dealing with cap considerations."

16 teams have already reached out to Burton and he's expected to have a strong market in free agency.

After spending the past few years as a backup behind Zach Ertz, Burton will look to be in a starting role.
