Neil Young to Release Archival ‘Roxy – Tonight’s the Night Live’

Shortly after Neil Young recorded the bulk of Tonight's the Night, he and his band performed the new songs at the Roxy, a club in West Hollywood that had recently opened. Now, Young is prepping those tapes for a March release called Roxy - Tonight's the Night Live.

Young made the announcement in a post on his online archives, in a newsletter-style page he just launched called "NYA Times-Contrarian." After describing the conditions that led up the sessions -- the drug-related deaths of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry -- and the writing of the record, he mentioned the concerts, which

“We had finished recording and decided to celebrate with a gig at a new club opening on the Sunset Strip, Roxy," he wrote. "We went there and recorded for a few nights, opening Roxy We really knew the Tonight’s the Night songs after playing them for a month, so we just played them again, the album, top to bottom, without the added songs, two sets a night for a few days. We had a great time.”

Tonight's the Night was recorded in mid-1973 with the Santa Monica Flyers, the name he gave to the band comprised of Nils Lofgren (piano), Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar), Billy Talbot (bass) and Ralph Molina (drums). But it was unreleased until 1975 because, as he put it, his friends at Warner Bros. "were concerned that it was so loose and we had just come off a bomb with Time Fades Away." that he decided to shelve it. After adding "Borrowed Tune," "Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown" and "Lookout Joe," he decided that it felt "more like a normal album" and put it out.

The above article also included some information about another planned release entitled Alchemy which will feature live recordings of a more recent vintage:

Glad to know these will be released; the article I read only mentioned streaming on NY's newest fiasco of a website.

Same here. And I agree about Neil's website. He often seems to be a very confused person.

I agree with you on that! I managed to get my hands on a thick catalog of personal items from the Broken Arrow Ranch he's auctioning off and it's like a charity auction. Everything is tremendously marked up. For only $250K to $300K you can own his restored 1953 Buick Skylark. Now from the average Joe, you could probably get a restored one for anywhere from $30K to $75K. I get the provenance of owning Neil's car but that's quite excessive.

Tons of toy trains, guitars, amps, compressors. Kind of a sad end to his legendary ranch. Pegi must be costing him a lot.

Maybe so, but I need the music so were even. This show is something I been hoping for decades (excuse the pun). For many Neil Young collectors this is a Holy Grail.

Were all getting up there and you know, you do what you got to do with your possessions, if your bless to even have them. Pono probably hit him hard so you do what you got to do.

Neil will be fine, he seems to be in a great relationship now so let's keep Neil in our good vibes. He has done so much for us. :ohyes:

'time fades away"

individual release......WTF!

to me, and it's just my own personal opinion, this is simple greed. you know, he knows how long his fans have waited for 'time fades away' on CD, and the only way to get iis in a $40 4 CD box set that 99% of his fans have the other 3 CD's.....greed....greed....greed.

and yes i know the other 3 CD's are newly remaster (with HDCD removed if it was there) and i really don't care. there is not one single neil young CD that ever sounded 'bad'.to begin with....... every one of them was well done from the get-go.

Why assume such a dark ulterior motive behind the marketing of reissues?

Years ago, Neil Young released remastered editions of the first four solo studio albums as a box set Official Release Series Discs 1-4, and also released the four albums as individual CD's, but the releases did not occur simultaneously, quite a bit of time passed between the two.

The boxes for Original Release Series Discs 5-8 and Original Release Series Discs 8.5-12 were released last August, barely five months ago. We don't know if there will eventually be individual album releases of these, but it would certainly make financial sense for the record company to wait for sales of the boxes to dwindle, or even go out-of-print, before releasing individual CD's.

As with most things Neil, a bit of patience is usually required.

Glad to see that there's finally a hard copy release date for this, but it's very disappointing that it's not an entire show.

interesting.

original CD had 12 songs

this has 10 songs

it also has 'walk on' from 'on the beach'

missing from 'tonight's the night': 'borrowed time' come on baby let's go downtown' and 'lookout joe'

and still no 'time fades away' by itself ......... and yes i am still bitching about it. it should be out on CD by itself. i know some disagree, but i stand by my feelings that it is a money grab. when you release an album on CD that your entire fan base has clamored for for years and years, and you only release it in a $40 box set that contains 3 other albums that every single one of your fans has, it is just not right and it is just greedy greedy greedy.

it wold be like bob seger releasing hie 3 missing CD's only in a 10 CD box set, or steve miller his missing 2 in a 6 CD box set. i would bitch about that too.

I'm definately in; I will wait for the almost certain 192/24 version (probably won't be a long wait). I was listening to a NY 96/24 the other night; while Neil's marketing skills may suck; whoever does his hi-res mastering is consistently phenomenal; as good as our hero, Mr Wilson.

"missing from 'tonight's the night': 'borrowed time' come on baby let's go downtown' and 'lookout joe'"

The three songs mentioned above are discussed in the announcement: all three were added in '75, two recorded then, one pulled from a '70 concert recording with Crazy Horse. The Santa Monica Flyer concerts were based on the '73 Tonight's The Night song-cycle. I have 2 Santa Monica Flyer shows, neither with "Walk On". Seeing that song on the setlist here is revelatory for me. Quite a coda for this OD-inspired narrative...

I do think the plan is to make the "Original Series" albums all individually available, as the first 4 albums are currently. Of course the record labels are all scamming to maximize CD-based profits/returns as the medium seems to be dying. If they really wanted a "money-grab", they could have wrapped the disc in a book with an LP, a scarf, and sundry shit and demanded $100. So I really don't think anyone should get too bent outta shape by TFA coming out in a budget-box pack.

As I've mentioned before, TFA is available legally as a 192/24 stand alone download (& it sounds great).

According to the Neil Young Set Lists posted at Sugarmtn.org (which is generally considered to be the most reliable source of info for Neil concerts), Neil Young and The Santa Monica Flyers played both an early show and a late show for three consecutive evenings at the Roxy in L.A., on September 20, 21, and 22, 1973.

All six sets contained an identical setlist for the first nine songs:

Tonight's The Night / Mellow My Mind / World On A String / Speakin' Out / Albuquerque / New Mama / Roll Another Number / Tired Eyes / Tonight's The Night

In addition, the following songs were also played during the set, after the first nine completed:

1973-09-20, Early Show: The Losing End / Walk On
1973-09-20, Late Show: Cowgirl In The Sand
1973-09-21, Early Show: The Losing End
1973-09-21, Late Show: Cowgirl In The Sand
1973-09-22, Early Show: The Losing End
1973-09-22, Late Show: Down By The River

For this new album Roxy: Tonight's The Night Live, I don't believe any details have been released yet regarding which night(s) the recordings have been pulled from, but if "Walk On" is indeed included then at least that song would likely be from the 9/20 early show, since it was only performed once during this stand.

This release would have been enhanced significantly if all the "extra" songs were included. So in addition to Walk On, we would get The Losing End, Cowgirl In The Sand and Down By The River. It makes no sense (I know, it's Neil) to exclude the 3 extra songs (assuming all shows were recorded) when they fit the theme of this archival release and there's room on the CD.

you are 1000% right, what you suggested is exactly how it should have been done.
