Description
The formation of Shadow King presented a unique and exciting opportunity, the band consisting of a veritable cavalcade of super-hot talent from a number of key musical touch stones. Vocalist Lou Gramm had propelled Foreigner to major success over two decades, whilst guitarist Vivian Campbell had been an integral member of Dio. The rhythm section of Bruce Turgon and Kevin Valentine had also served in a number of highly respected outfits, including Warrior and Steve Stevens's Atomic Playboys, so the creation of Shadow King was greeted with huge anticipation. Signed to Atlantic Records, home of Foreigner, the quartet were paired with acclaimed producer Keith Olsen (Whitesnake, Heart, Ozzy Osbourne) and recorded in Los Angeles. It was a productive pairing, with the results displaying not only a brace of killer songs, but also a sonic sheen that looked set to propel the band into the melodic rock super league. But sadly that was not to be. According to the group there were dark forces at work within the label attempting to derail the project in an effort to reunite Lou Gramm with Foreigner. Matters were also complicated by guitarist Vivian Campbell being approached by Def Leppard, looking to replace recently deceased guitarist Steve Clark. All that bad luck combined with the rising tide of grunge taking a firm foothold the band floundered, playing only one highly praised gig in London before falling apart and leaving behind just this superlative, solitary, album. I'll definitely be getting this. I have the original CD but I would love a re-master of this one.

Shadow King was a hard rock supergroup. Formed by former Foreigner lead singer Lou Gramm, former Sweet Savage, Dio, Whitesnake, Riverdogs, (currently Def Leppard) guitarist Vivian Campbell, Lou Gramm's former Black Sheep and then future Foreigner bandmate bass player Bruce Turgon, and drummer Kevin Valentine.

I never heard this, so maybe I will get this. Interesting group of musicians.

All I remember was that it came out and then a short while later, Lou Gramm returned to Foreigner (without the quotation marks).

This was a huge big-budget bomb, but I've only heard a few cuts.

It didn't even chart and Lou later accused Mick Jones of telling Atlantic not to promote it (like Mick would have that power???)

"I Want You" was a Top 30 radio cut, but faded quickly.

MTV banned the video and I remember it being rather steamy.

Lou and Bruce joined Foreigner the following year and Viv went to Def Lep the same year.

Kevin Valentine is the awesome drummer from Donnie iris & The Cruisers and has done loads of sessions including playing on virtually all of Psycho Circus from KISS if I recall.

I've got the original disc and it sounds fine.

"Fine" is a good description for the music too. I remember being really pissed when I heard Viv left Riverdogs for this.

I have this one, but honestly I can't remember if I ever listened to it. Maybe I'll have to check it out now that you've all reminded me. I was a sucker for the Lou Gramm connection.

This was aired on MTV Europe, you can tell by the misplaced logo and chyron.

MTV never played it in the US, which didn't help sales.

I've never heard the whole album, but this song rocks and has a dark edge to it.
