I was on the phone with Cyborg Caveman a couple weeks ago and he mentioned that we wouldn't need Luke Skywalker if Han Solo could use a lightsaber. Now, Luke is my favorite OT character but I always assumed I was in the minority, like with Superman and Batman. Almost everyone I know prefers the Dark Knight to the Man of Steel except for a few comics fans I know online, like Zaki and Sparks. However, when I asked my father-in-law and two of my best friends (one being WANker Bishop Hammer) last weekend, Luke was chosen 2-1 over Han with only Bishop preferring the rogue to the knight. So that got me curious -- who do you prefer, LUKE or HAN?

Han was always my favorite. When he was frozen and left that way in between Empire and Jedi it was nerve wracking for me as a kid. I really wanted to believe he was going to be ok and I am glad he was. Also, his scenes in TFA were gold for me. Seeing him back was great until they killed him.

Chewbacca.
I wanted to be like Han when I grew up, not like Luke, even though Luke is clearly the 'man of destiny' figure who's somehow going to make things right. I can't say either was my favourite character, but if wanting to be like someone when you grew up equals 'favourite' then I'll have to vote for Han (even though Chewbacca is totally my favourite Star Wars character).

Han. Even Mark Hamill himself said he would have played the roguish gentlemen, Mr Solo because he was a more fleshed out character and was just overall cooler.
That being said if he had force powers too then it would just be overkill and then he wouldn't have been so likable. I mean just think about it he's the most charismatic guy in the movie; has a loyal and best friend in Chewbacca; has a pimp ride with the Millennium Falcon; and got the only girl in the entire trilogy. That's the right amount of swag to make you like him without wanting to barf. If on top of all theose he had telekinesis; mind control, and a laser sword Han would have been too unrelatable. There's no way you could have related to him in the slightest.
Luke having all the aforementioned powers but being an everyman is why he played off of Solo so well. They each had something that made them special and had traits the other didn't have. They each made the other shine.

Going with Solo; way cooler, had a less obvious story arc, and got the girl. I also think the fact that Ford was the best actor of the three was a huge contributor.

When I was a kid I wanted to be Luke. From teenager on, I wanted to be Han.

Luke, the boy of prophecy and destiny, was kind of a whiner. He chased his fate and when he let himself down, fled and hid.
Han, a man in the right place at the wrong time, was always running from something or someone, until he wasn't and became a hero despite himself.
I don't think I can choose one over the other. The story only works with the two of them, sparring, fighting hip to hip and saving each other.

Han. In my youth, I couldn't decide whether I wanted to be with him, or be him. Probably predominantly the latter, as my crush was transient, but he seemed very relatable.

Maybe Han is a lovable rogue, but he's more selfish and self centered than I would like. His best feature is his friendship with Chewy showing he's more than just a smuggler. And while smuggling isn't such a bad thing in a placed ruled by the Empire, he deals with some fairly unsavory characters - like the Huts, perhaps oblivious to the damage they do and the lives they take just doing business. And he shot first.
Luke was younger and more inexperienced, but he was strong with the force - there's a mystical connection to life and the universe that captures the imagination. And friendship, courage, daring, and his willingness to go the distance for family and friends were all pretty impressive.
Oh, as written, the rogue might be more fun to play as actors, but I'd rather be the Jedi. And I don't put a lot of fault in a character if they have Mary Sue or Gary Stu characteristics like some people do. He's a Jedi, or Jedi material - one in a million (or whatever), so if you'd rather watch Joe everyman struggling to make the rent or whatever, go ahead.
Luke gets my vote.

And friendship, courage, daring, and his willingness to go the distance for family and friends were all pretty impressive. Those are my feelings too. Luke was SUPPOSED to be whiny and uncool at the start. The story was largely about his growth as a character. I do understand the attraction of Han. He was a lovable rogue, and he got a good character arc of his own. But it's hard for me to admire a rogue, even a lovable one.
