'Jurassic World' sequel will be a 'different kind of film', says director Colin Trevorrow
The sequel to Jurassic World will be a "different kind of film" to this year's dinosaur blockbuster, director Colin Trevorrow has revealed.
Trevorrow will not be returning to the director's chair for the sequel, but he will serve as one of its executive producers and is co-writing its script. Universal announced over the summer that the Jurassic World follow-up will be released on June 22, 2018.
During an interview on the Jurassic Cast podcast, Trevorrow said of the sequel: "It will get to be a different kind of film. The audience has given us permission to a certain extent to take this to the next level, and I don't necessarily mean in scale."
"I feel very strongly that it's not about more dinosaurs, or bigger and better dinosaurs," he explained. "It's about using this as a starting point for a much larger story about our relationship with these animals and about animals in general and the dynamic created by bringing them back to life."
Both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are reprising their roles for the sequel, and Trevorrow explained that their characters, Owen and Claire, will be inextricably linked to its storyline.
"The two of them opened Pandora's Box in Jurassic World and each of them are responsible for different elements of it in different ways," Trevorrow said.
"I think the way that these characters are connected to the circumstances of what's happening, it's different than the previous [Jurassic Park films]. It's not, 'Let's manufacture a way to get them somewhere'. They're embedded into it now in a way that as story tellers makes it much easier for us to keep them involved and doesn't feel as contrived."

This way lies madness.

'Jurassic World' Sequel Finds Its Director
J.A. Bayona, the Spanish filmmaker who broke through with his gripping tsunami drama The Impossible, has signed on to direct the sequel to Jurassic World, Universal’s $1.6 billion-grossing juggernaut that relaunched the rampaging dinosaur franchise.
Colin Trevorrow directed the movie but won’t return to the director’s chair, as he is now working on Star Wars: Episode IX. However, Trevorrow is writing the script for Jurassic with his frequent collaborator Derek Connolly.
Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are expected to return for the movie, which has a June 22, 2018 release date.
Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley are producing while Steven Spielberg and Trevorrow are exec producing the next chapter in the franchise. Belén Atienza joins the team as a producer.
Bayona was courted by the Jurassic team last year but he had a holding deal with Paramount to direct a sequel to World War Z that prevented him from jumping ship. Paramount even hired a new writer on World War Z 2 to keep the momentum going.
But in January Bayona officially left the Paramount project, with the studio issuing the following statement: “Because of pre-existing film commitments, Bayona is not able to make World War Z this year, and it is our ambition to do so. He is a wonderful director, and we hope to work with him soon.”
Bayona is now in post on A Monster Calls, his adaptation of the Patrick Ness book that stars Liam Neeson and Felicity Jones. Focus Features is releasing the movie Oct. 14.

'Jurassic World 2' Casts 'Get Down' Star Justice Smith
Justice Smith, the star of Baz Lurhmann’s The Get Down, has joined Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s next Jurassic World film.
J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) is directing the project, which is in preproduction as it heads toward a spring start in England.
Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, is writing the script with Derek Connolly. Details are being kept buried deep underground, although Pratt and Howard are reprising their roles from the original pic.
Jurassic World was the much-heralded return to the dinosaurs first seen in 1993's Jurassic Park, the Steven Spielberg movie based on the Michael Crichton novel. Jurassic World ultimately stomped its way to $1.67 billion at the box office when it was released in 2015.
Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley are producing the new installment, with Trevorrow and Spielberg executive producing. Belen Atienza is also a producer.
Smith led the cast of Lurhmann’s stylish The Get Down, which followed a group of teens in 1970s Bronx. He played Ezekiel on the Netflix show. The actor also appeared in Paper Towns, Fox 2000’s adaptation of a John Green YA novel that starred Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne. Before Smith heads off for the Jurassic follow-up, he will star opposite Lucas Hedges in the off-Broadway play Yen, which is set to begin previews on Jan. 12 and open Jan. 30.

'Jurassic World' Sequel Adds New Female Lead
Daniella Pineda has joined the cast of Universal's Jurassic World sequel.
Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt will return for the J.A. Bayona-directed follow-up, which recently added The Get Down's Justice Smith.
All plot and character details are being kept under wraps, but it is probably safe to expect loads of dinosaurs.
Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow co-wrote the screenplay with Derek Connolly and will executive produce with Steven Spielberg. Belén Atienza, Patrick Crowley and Frank Marshall will produce.
The 2015 feature grossed $1.67 billion at the global box office, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing movie of all time.
This is poised to be a breakout role for Pineda, whose past credits are largely on TV shows like TBS' The Detour and HBO's High Maintenance. She next will appear in the indie feature Mr. Roosevelt.
Pineda is repped by Innovative Artists, Kirsten Ames Management and Schreck Rose Dapello & Adams.

James Cromwell Joins 'Jurassic World' Sequel
Veteran actor James Cromwell has teamed up with the cast of Universal's Jurassic World sequel.
The actor now joins returning actors Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in the production, which also has Toby Jones and Get Down star Justice Smith, among others, on its call sheet.
J.A. Bayona, who helmed the recent fantasy A Monster Calls, will be behind the camera when the movie begins shooting later this month. Universal has set June 22, 2018, as the release date.
Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, wrote the script with Derek Connolly. Details are being kept buried deep underground, and character details for Cromwell were not revealed (although it is known that Pratt and Howard are reprising their roles from the original pic).
Producing are Frank Marshall, Pat Crowley, Steven Spielberg and Trevorrow. Belen Atienza joins the team as a producer.
Sara Scott, vp production, is overseeing production on behalf of the studio.
Cromwell, who has been acting for more than 50 years, earned an Oscar nomination for the much loved children's movie Babe and has appeared in movies ranging from L.A. Confidential and The Green Mile to Spider-Man 3 and The Artist. He won an Emmy for his work on the third season of American Horror Story.

Jeff Goldblum Joins 'Jurassic World' Sequel
Jeff Goldblum is returning to the land of dinosaurs.
The actor, who co-starred in 1993's Jurassic Park and 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park, will appear in Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s next Jurassic World film.
J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) is directing the next installment in the studio's hit franchise. Jurassic World earned $1.67 billion worldwide in 2015 and is the fourth-highest-grossing film in history.
Stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are returning for the sequel, which also stars Justice Smith, James Cromwell and Toby Jones. Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, wrote the script for the follow-up with Derek Connolly. The film is slated for release on June 22, 2018.
Producers Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley once again join executive producers Steven Spielberg and Trevorrow in the next chapter of the franchise. Belén Atienza is also producing. Universal vp production Sara Scott is overseeing production on behalf of the studio.
Goldblum will reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm, the know-it-all mathematician who came to the park as an insurance consultant — and somehow survived both the original film and the sequel.
Goldblum will next be seen in Disney and Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, set to hit theaters Nov. 3. His other recent credits include Independence Day: Resurgence and The Grand Budapest Hotel. He also is reuniting with director Wes Anderson on the upcoming film Isle of Dogs.
Goldblum is repped by ICM, Industry Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson.

That trailer was kind of a mess and not at all the direction I thought this movie would go in. But it's got amazing looking dinosaurs in it, so I will see it opening weekend.
