NEW YORK — Unreleased songs recorded by Jimi Hendrix between 1968 and 1970 will be released next year.
Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings announced Wednesday that they will release Hendrix's "Both Sides of the Sky" on March 9, 2018. The 13-track album includes 10 songs that have never been released.
Hendrix died in 1970 at age 27. The new album is the third volume in a trilogy from the guitar hero's archive. "Valleys of Neptune" was released in 2010, followed by "People, Hell and Angels," released in 2013.
Eddie Kramer, who worked as recording engineer on every Hendrix album made during the artist's life, said in an interview that 1969 was "a very experimental year" for Hendrix, and that he was blown away as he worked on the new album.
"The first thing is you put the tape on and you listen to it and the hairs just stand up right on the back of your neck and you go, 'Oh my God. This is too (expletive) incredible," said Kramer. "It's an incredible thing. Forty, 50 years later here we are and I'm listening to these tapes going, 'Oh my God, that's an amazing performance.'"
Many of the album's tracks were recorded by Band of Gypsys, Hendrix's trio with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox. Stephen Stills appears on two songs: "$20 Fine" and "Woodstock."
"It sounds like Crosby, Stills & Nash except it's on acid, you know," Kramer, laughing, said of "$20 Fine."
"Jimi is just rocking it," he added. "It's an amazing thing."
Johnny Winter appears on "Things I Used to Do"; original Jimi Hendrix Experience members Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding are featured on "Hear My Train A Comin'''; and Lonnie Youngblood is on "Georgia Blues."
Kramer produced the album alongside John McDermott and Janie Hendrix, the legend's sister and president of Experience Hendrix. Kramer said though "Both Sides of the Sky" is the last of the trilogy, someone could find new Hendrix music in an attic or a basement, which could be re-worked.
He also said they have live footage of Hendrix, some just audio and some in video, which they plan to release.
"It was amazing just to watch him in the studio or live. The brain kicks off the thought process — it goes through his brain through his heart and through his hands and onto the guitar, and it's a seamless process," Kramer said. "It's like a lead guitar and a rhythm guitar at the same time, and it's scary. There's never been another Jimi Hendrix, at least in my mind."

this is confusing for me:
i swear that when they were doing stills box set there were published reports (which i tried to find to no avail) that said there NO songs by stills and hendrix of any value other than the one instrumental they put on still box set.
now these 2 things show up a couple of years later.
originally, like for the last 30 years, there were "hours and hours" of tapes of stills and hendrix...........
the whole hendrix thing has me very bewildered, and has had me very bewildered for years now.

I wish they'd find tapes of him playing with Zappa and the Mothers at the Garrick in NYC 1967. FZ always claimed he had nothing recorded.
Also the Black Gold cassette that he had loaned to Mitch Mitchell that was put on the shelf at his house and forgotten about.

Well, at least this latest posthumous release is being supervised by Eddie Kramer, who was actually there and worked with Hendrix, unlike say, Alan Douglas.
Although, curiously enough, I would love to own copies of some of Douglas's albums because they are long out of print and a curiosity to me.

A must have for the Stills content alone, but this does sound promising. However, I'm with you, Renny -- we were told there were no more decent Stills/Hendrix sessions in the vaults. Surprise, surprise, now we have two. With Stills on lead vocals, these should have been on the Stills box set, not the new Hendrix album.
We've been led down this path before -- the great lost Hendrix album -- but I'll probably have to buy this to hear it myself. The fact that Eddie Kramer is involved is probably a very good sign.

i'm hoping for spotify so i can hear the stills songs first.
i know i shouldn't be, but i am so wary of hendrix at this point in time, i mean seriously, he has been dead for almost 50 years and they just keep finding this stuff.............how is this possible, how?

I'm likely in. The JH estate has been releasing stuff in hr also which I obviously like also. What I don't like is the price; the APO Hendrix's are $35 ($5 more than ANY other APO SACD); & that's obviously based solely on name recognition. I'm also still pretty disappointed that the APO AYE is only going to have the original USA tracks.

To be fair, even if the Hendrix people knew about these cuts, that doesn't mean Graham Nash or whoever was putting the Stills box set together had access to them, or even knew about them.

very true, not to be repetitive, but i recall stills even saying there was nothing, that it was just late night jamming with little or no song structure. you don't think, with stills recent resurgence, experience hendrix would be trying to take advantage of that, do you?

I ordered it without a moment's hesitation, but it does elicit the question: what is left in the Hendrix vaults? Royal Albert Hall comes to mind. Anything else?
