I still get most of the lists I got when my business was booming, & unfortunately it explains a lot of what happened. It's gone from 15 or so overstock wholesale companies in competition to two; both of whom have raised prices.

It appears that most overstock cd's are now going direct to huge retailers (who buy at least 1k pieces at a time, usually more like 10k; & I know of 1 wholesaler (there MAY be a 2nd similar guy in Canada, I don't know if he went under or stopped sending me lists) who's buying in big quantities & requiring his customers to prepay & minimum order is 1k pieces (it used to be a 30 piece or so minimum with most overstock wholesalers)

Of the last 3 I was aware of who haven't gone under, 1 recently merged with the owner of #2 & changed to vinyl only. #2 has new ownership & drastically raised prices, & #3 has also raised his prices.

This makes it impossible for a guy like me to compete, when my wholesale is more than the big Amazon 3rd party retailer's retail pricing.

Ernie B's (who did both retail & wholesale) is as I suspected also going under. Apparently the original "Ernie" who was bought out a couple years ago is starting a new music wholesaler, I have no idea what his pricing & selection will be like yet.

Another thing that's essentially disappeared is the used CD stores where you could browse to your hearts content and sometimes find something neat. Miss those stores. Plenty of "vinyl" stores around.

went CD shopping yesterday with a friend, as we always do on black friday, and i brought 15 CD's with me to trade in. we only went to 2 stores, mainly because most stores have closed, i came home with 11 of the 15 CD's.

they simply did not want them, and for the 4 they took, i got $2 in trade.

the one store manager said that their database estimates "years supply" of a title....and that they have some CD's in their stock that have 20+ years before they would sell out.

Lots of pawn shops & thrift stores here; + 1/2 price books, a terrible used chain called Golden Oldies & Fye off the top of my head.

Many of the pawn shops have stopped accepting cd's at all, though.

We have Bullmoose music for that now. They mix in lots of used ones with the new ones. I just sold a bunch of CDs to them weekend before last. They are my go-to chain store for CDs currently. Newbury Comics has shrunk their CD section mightily (ask Jimbo about last summer's visit there) and are less of a "go to" store for me now.

I've got a Newbury Comics in my town, and my heart sinks each time I go in there and find that the CD selection has shrunk even further. I suppose I should feel lucky even having a music store--or, rather, a store that sells music--nearby. It helps, though, that right across the street is a store that mainly used CDs, along with very small number of new releases CDs and used vinyl and DVDs.

Half Price Books has become my “go to” store for used CDs. (We still have a good indie store, which tends to have a better selection of used discs. I like to shop there and support them, but it’s a bit of a haul from where I live. There are several HPB stores within a short radius that I can easily hit, and I’ve had pretty good luck there over the years.

Austin still has some record stores that buy used CD's, and I suppose some of the pawn shops still have some CD's. I like the Half-Price Books here because they have substantial "Clearance CD" sections below the regular CD stock that go for one or two dollars. Mostly garbage, but I've picked up some great stuff over the years.

Last time I was at the Mall in Myrtle Beach they did. That was last year. I assume they still do. That's providing they are still open, with all the retailer closings.

The Tampa Bay area has multiple options for CD/vinyl holdouts. In fact, I don't know what they're doing right, but one local retailer just radically expanded one of their brick-and-mortar outlets:

One of the things I miss most about living in the Tampa Bay area (well, other than great weather, family, beaches, palm trees, etc.) is shopping at Sound Exchange.

Bullmoose buys used CDs. You won't get a lot for 'em, but I was happy to have enough store credit to buy a couple of goodies on my last visit there.
