Quentin Tarantino and J.J. Abrams Team Up for 'Star Trek' Movie

Quentin Tarantino is ready to explore strange new worlds.

The filmmaker has a pitch for a Star Trek film, and he has shared his vision with J.J. Abrams, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Tarantino and Abrams have plans to bring together a writers room to develop a film at Star Trek studio Paramount. Tarantino has an eye to direct the potential project.

The studio had no comment.

Abrams rebooted the franchise with 2009's Star Trek and also helmed 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, before pivoting to Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He remains a producer on the Star Trek franchise even as he readies 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX. Paramount previously stated it was developing a fourth Star Trek film to star Chris Hemsworth as Captain Kirk's (Chris Pine) father, but no director has been attached and it's unclear where this Tarantino development leaves the project. The latest installment, Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond (2016), was well-liked by critics but earned just $343.4 million worldwide, the lowest in the rebooted universe.

In a 2015 Nerdist podcast interview, Tarantino revealed that he would be more likely to direct a Star Trek film over a Star Wars pic, noting he was a big fan of the original series.

"The only thing that limited them was their '60s budget and eight-day shooting schedule," he said. "You could take some of the classic Star Trek episodes and easily expand them to 90 minutes or more and really do some amazing, amazing stuff." Tarantino called the time-travel-focused Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" as one of the best Star Trek episodes ever written.

Tarantino next tackles an untitled Charles Manson-themed project, which is due out in 2019.

He has the most important prerequisite right there.

It's almost like Hollywood have adopted the whole Elseworlds principle on a massive scale. Is there anything they won't throw against the wall to see if it'll stick?

I don't care how outlandish this sounds, this would be epic.

What's the bet that Uma Thurman will be cast as a Romulan seductress? Samuel L. Jackson as a Klingon warlord? Tarantino himself will appear in a cameo as a redshirt (with a terrible Australian accent) being killed in the first ten minutes?

This one almost writes itself.

Do I have a sign outside my starbase that says "Dead Romulan Storage"?

Hey, you know what they call Gagh on Proxima Centauri? A Royale with cheese.

Klingons don't tip. It's too much like ...bathing.

Khan incapacitates the Enterprise

Chekov: Keptin, Are you OK?
Kirk: Nah, Chekov, I'm pretty fucking far from OK.
Chekov: What now?
Kirk: What now? Let me tell you what now. I'ma call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' Klingons, who'll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', Khan, genetically enhanced boy? I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ass.

etc.....

If this is how the current series of Trek feature films ends, I'm cool with it.

They really don't know what to do with Star Trek anymore, do they?

On the face of it, this sounds like a terrible idea for both Tarantino and STAR TREK. But I bet Tarantino has OST episodes memorized, and if this thing comes off it'll probably be awesome.

I'll admit I'd watch a Tarantino directed Star Trek movie...but I'd be laughing all the way through it, I'm sure. I don't want to find Trek funny, but I'm pretty sure the 'inglorious basterd' in Tarantino would come to the fore and he'd be unable to restrain himself in terms of violence, bloodshed and foul language.

It does remind me of that episode of CSI that he directed - he showed there that he is pretty good with doing his own take on a formula franchise.

Maybe Tarantino can rein it in, but a Trek movie shouldn't be Rated R.

It's clear that Paramount has no creative vision and is grasping at straws to keep the franchise alive.

It's a hell of an interesting straw to grasp at, I have to admit - and it's got people talking. I haven't bothered with any Star Trek since I saw the first Abrams movie, shrugged, and stopped caring entirely.
