James Franco in Talks to Join Fox's X-Men Universe with 'Multiple Man' Movie

Simon Kinberg will produce the feature about the mutant with the power to duplicate himself.
James Franco may be the next star to join Fox's X-Men universe.

The multihyphenate is in negotiations to play Multiple Man in a stand-alone being developed by X-Men producer Simon Kinberg, godfather of Fox's universe based on the uncanny Marvel mutants.

Allan Heinberg, one of the writers behind Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman, is set to pen the feature. Kinberg would produce under his Genre Films label, along with Franco and his Ramona Films.

Jamie Madrox, also known as Multiple Man, has the mutant power to create and control duplicates of himself. The character first appeared in 1975's Giant-Size Fantastic Four No. 4 and was created by the late Len Wein, the comic book mind behind classic characters such as Wolverine. He's appeared on the big screen before, with Eric Dane playing him in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, which was directed by Brett Ratner and written by Kinberg.

The move comes as Fox has been ramping up its X-Men universe. It will release three films next year, with New Mutants (April 13), Deadpool 2 (June 1) and the Kinberg-directed X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Nov. 2) on the docket. A Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum has Gore Verbinski set to helm, while Logan filmmaker James Mangold is developing a spinoff centering on the young breakout character Laura (Dafne Keen).

Franco will next be seen in A24's The Disaster Artist, for which he is already receiving awards buzz as the movie's director and star. He is set to star in the Cohen brothers' first foray into television, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Franco is repped by UTA, Anonymous and Sloane Offer.

A little more info - and now this falls into the "WHY?" category for me - is there something about the character (like Wolverine) that lends itself to this kind of treatment? Seems more like "because we can" move.

James Franco is making a ‘hard R-rated’ X-Men spinoff movie

The rumors are true: James Franco is making an X-Men spinoff movie.

The spinoff will star Franco as Jamie Madrox the Multiple Man, an obscure but temptingly weird character from the X-Men franchise. Madrox can create duplicates of himself and is best known for his role as a detective in the X-Factor Investigations comics. He doesn’t fall on an obvious side of the hero/villain binary, previously appearing as one of Magneto’s henchmen in X-Men: The Last Stand.

Multiple Man is still in the early stages of development, but Franco confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that he’s “producing and performing in it.” Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg is working on the screenplay.

“What I love about what [producer] Simon Kinberg and Fox and the X-Men people have done with Deadpool and Logan—it took a while to get there, maybe 10 years — but they are going to go hard R,” said Franco. He also said they’re planning to “really push it into a new genre,” although he didn’t say what genre that would be. Crime drama would be the predictable choice, but if there’s one person we can trust to get weird, it’s James Franco.

Currently starring as a pair of twins in HBO’s The Deuce, Franco already has experience acting opposite himself. If all goes to plan, Multiple Man may allow him to fulfill what we assume is a lifelong dream: getting to make out with his own clone.

The next two X-Men franchise movies are X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, both out in 2018. Channing Tatum‘s Gambit movie is still allegedly in the works for 2019, but we’ll believe that when cameras actually start rolling.

Because Deadpool and Logan are the two most successful X-movies.

Sure. But those particular characters actually benefited from the R. How does Multiple Man benefit from it?

Doesn't matter. To the Fox execs, R-rated = $$$.

Going forward, expect the team movies to remain PG-13, and everything else to be R-rated.

They're already marketing New Mutants as a horror-type movie. I will not be surprised if it's R-rated.

With Dr. Manhattan-like sex scenes.
