Description
On Real Gone, Tom Waits walks a fraying tightrope. By utterly eliminating one of the cornerstone elements of his sound -- keyboards -- he has also removed his safety net. With songwriting and production partner Kathleen Brennan, he strips away almost everything conventional from these songs, taking them down to the essences of skeletal rhythms, blasted and guttural blues, razor-cut rural folk music, and the rusty-edge poetry and craft of songwriting itself. Real Gone is like two records in one and the contrasting emotions of each play off of each other perfectly. The up tempo tracks are some of the rawest and most kinetic he’s ever laid down, while the ballads are among his most haunting and beautiful, even chilling at times. Taken as a whole, the experience is breathtaking. Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan have personally remixed and remastered Real Gone from the original master tapes bringing a new sonic brilliance to their 2004 creation.

To my knowledge this is the first Waits remaster in the US.

Not sure why this one is starting things, but why not?

It is also a remix and Waits had a hand in it.

No word on any bonus cuts.

We now have the pre-order link the first post. Anti- says that this will be the first in a series of Tom Waits remasters.

A little bit of info about this remix/remaster project:

https://consequenceofsound.net/2017/10/ ... real-gone/

All of them are due out before the end of the year!

Hmmmm...this is only the Anti-Epitaph catalogue which needs no remixing or remastering to be honest.

I may not bother, but if there's something unique (in a good way) about the sound and bonus cuts, then I might be interested.

I'm not sure about this though.

I want those legendary Asylum and Island albums remastered!

Reading the article at the link, the only album that specifically says it is being remixed is "Real Gone". There is no mention of the rest of the catalog being remixed, just remastered.

I went to the Waits website and the only one mentioned as being remixed is Real Gone.

There are no bonus tracks on any of them.

I will pass.

Just discovered Waits' Asylum albums are out of print. I'm surprised. They're getting good money on ebay.

My copy of the "Real Gone" Remix came today. There was no sticker or anything on the liner notes about a remix. I think AmazWAN shipped me the wrong version. Did anybody else here get this new remix?

From the Amazon order page it says remixed and remastered, but has reviews from 2015 and earlier, with nothing recent. I would question if it's actually the new mix.

Amazon links all the reviews for a title together, regardless which pressing it is. The reviews don't prove or disprove anything. We need somebody else who ordered and received this to confirm which version was sent.

What is the catalog number? Original mix should read 86678-2, the remix should be 87548-2.

I got mine today from Amazon. Remix sounds very different. Only way I could tell my cd was the remixed one, other than sound, was that the cover was smooth whereas the original cd has a rough texture you could strike a match on. What I got was definitely the new version.

The digipak does have a new UPC sticker stuck on over the one actually printed on the package itself. UPC #045778754823. My original is buried in a pile due to me adding cabinets for my collection so I can't compare. The CD in the new edition I just got has the 86678-2 catalog # printed on the disc. What lazy bastards to not put anything on the package to identify the new mix but a new UPC sticker.

My copy of Real Gone has the exact same sticker, same catalog number on the disc, etc. and it is the new mix. It is a very different mix. And, the cover art is flat not textured like the original which renders the inner artwork that says “close cover before striking” moot. The remix makes Waits’s vocals clearer and the album sounds less muddy (which can be seen as good or bad). I enjoy it but I was never as into this album as others in the Waits catalog.

I also picked up Mule Variations (remastered). The only way to tell it’s the new version is a sticker on the shrink wrap “Newly Remastered with Waits/Brennan” and 86547-2S3C under the words. Nothing on outside of disc would let you know. The cd itself has the code 86547-2 on the bottom. Everything else says 1999. I haven’t listened to it yet — I didn’t think it needed a remaster but I couldn’t resist.

I wish they had made finding the remastered CDs and especially the remixed and remastered Real Gone easier.
