I'm thinking about exploring his catalogue and would love some advice on where to start. I tend not to like straight country, but I do love Americana (Tim Easton, Wilco, Son Volt, Wilco, most Steve Earle). I love Kris Kristofferson, Willy Nelson, and the other outlaw country artists too. Does anything in Isbell's catalogue match that description?

his solo stuff (and with his band the 400 unit) is just excellent, both musically and lyrically.

I recommend that you start with Jason Isbell's "Southeastern" album from 2013, his fourth solo record. It's just outstanding, lyrically and musically, and it won the Americana Award for Album of the Year. Once you hear it, you'll want everything in his catalog. His studio CDs have a more Americana sound, but the concert I saw a couple of years ago, with his excellent band the 400 Unit, featured a louder, tougher sound on the uptempo and mid-tempo songs.
