Coming in December, the 40th anniversary special edition including vinyl and Blu-ray with new 5.1 Steven Wilson mix.

Click for full size

Description
The A Farewell to Kings 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe version includes three CDs, one Blu-ray Audio disc and four high-quality 180-gram vinyl LPs.

The set encompasses the Abbey Road Mastering Studios 2015 remastered edition of the album for the first time on CD; a complete Rush concert recorded in February 1978 at London's Hammersmith Odeon, newly mixed by longtime Rush engineer and original A Farewell to Kings producer Terry Brown from the multi-track live tapes; four newly-recorded cover versions of songs from the original album by Dream Theater, Big Wreck, The Trews and Alain Johannes; and an instrumental studio outtake of the spacey sound effects the band has creatively titled “Cygnus X-2 Eh.”

The Hammersmith show features, for the first-time ever, over 34 minutes of unreleased performances including a complete “2112” suite, “Lakeside Park,” a drum solo and “Closer To The Heart.” The Super Deluxe Edition's audio content on its CDs is duplicated on its vinyl discs. Meanwhile, the Blu-ray Audio disc contains a brand new 5.1 surround mix of the album by four-time Grammy® nominated surround sound producer Steven Wilson, along with three original 1977 promo videos from a newly found 2-inch quad video master significantly improving the video quality for “Closer To The Heart.” The Super Deluxe package also includes an elaborate new 40th anniversary cover treatment by longtime Rush creative director Hugh Syme, who has also created a new piece of artwork for each of the album's six songs, and an extensive 12,000-word liner notes by Grammy®-winning rock historian Rob Bowman.

Finally, The Super Deluxe Edition includes several exclusive items, including a unique King's Ring, with custom velvet pouch and neck chain; two lithographs with original artwork by Hugh Syme; a special 12-inch turntable mat featuring distinctive artwork by Hugh Syme; and a reproduction of Rush's original 1978 A Farewell To Kings tour program.

So the consumer has to buy 4 slabs of vinyl and pay $150 to get the Blu-ray?

Seems so at this point.

Rush must be looking to become the kings of throwing in a quality extra into a larger box set full of repeat stuff that most people probably don't want.

-The 5.1 mixes in the Sector box sets
-The bonus disk in the R40 Blu-Ray collection
-The Steven Wilson mix in this box set

The Rush 5.1 mixes to this point have been lackluster to say the least so a Steven Wilson mix intrigues but buying an expensive box set is a tough way to do it.

Maybe they'll put the Blu ray out on its own eventually.

So, basically another remaster/remix and just a few live cuts added to the 1978 disc from Different Stages?

I'll look for it after it goes on sale, but as much as I love this album, there's not much compelling here.

Id love to get this for the CDs & 5.1 mix.
It seems the vinyl in box sets isn't going to go away!

I don't do vinyl since the 1980s.

I believe eventually we will get this Blu-ray as a standalone or at least packaged with CD. But I have to say no for the vinyl box, I will never play them.

It's one of my top five favorite Rush albums and one the chicks finale like with Closer To The Heart and to hear the Steve Wilson 5.1 mix is a must but I agree, another unwieldy super box with vinyl that I will never play is a major bummer.

I don't even care about the 3CD version (the album is perfect as it is) but damn, a 5.1 mix by Steven Wilson.? :(

I agree that their surround sound mixes have mostly been very disappointing, especially the live material (I usually select stereo for their DVDs & blu-rays). Ironically, my favorite 5.1 mix was A Farewell To Kings in the Sector 2 box set. Would still love to hear what Steven Wilson did with this album but won't be able to justify the cost of this box set.

If there's a separate 5.1 blu ray release, I'm in.

I dug out my individual Blu-Ray Audio copies of Fly By Night/ A Farewell To Kings/ Hemispheres to check out this weekend once again.
I have to assume this new mix done by Wilson of A Farewell To Kings should blow away the previous version.

I didn't notice the covers.

Not a known list of acts aside from Dream Theater but hearing them tackle "Xanadu" should be damn cool.

I was under the impression that Dream Theater, Big Wreck and The Trews are all pretty big selling acts in Canada.

Steven Wilson posted this a little while ago on Facebook:

Earlier this year, I was asked by RUSH to remix their classic 1977 album "A Farewell to Kings" into 5.1 surround sound for its 40th anniversary, and it now appears on Blu-ray as part of a deluxe box set that also includes 3CDs and 4 vinyl LPs to be released on 1st December. The remix was done with feedback and final approval from Alex Lifeson. I also made stereo and 5.1 mixes of a 4 minute instrumental sequence found on the original tapes. This is basically a longer alternate version of the electronic music used at the start of Cygnus X-1, so not a new Rush song as such, more a piece of sound design, but hopefully interesting to hear if you're a fan of the album. Pre-ordering and full details of the contents of the set (which also includes a complete 1978 concert recording) can be found here - [see first post]

Better -- the USA pre-order price for the big box has dropped by $20, and is now $128.24:
