From the left -- 1CD Standard Edition, 2CD Deluxe Edition, 2LP Vinyl Edition:

Description
On 1 December, Polydor will release a collection capturing the formative years of the Rolling Stones as they've rarely been heard before. The Rolling Stones — On Air is a new compilation of radio recordings made by the group between 1963 and 1965 for BBC shows of the time such as Saturday Club, Top Gear, Rhythm and Blues and the Joe Loss Pop Show.

On Air will be available on CD, double CD deluxe edition and heavyweight vinyl. It follows the recent publication by Virgin Books of a book of the same name by author Richard Havers.

Eight tracks performed for the various shows were never recorded by the Stones for a commercial release; seven more made their debut on air before being released on albums or EPs. That underlines the fact that as their stature as major artists grew ever greater, the Stones were such frequent visitors to the BBC that they were constantly striving to perform a wide selection of material.

Highlights of the album include ‘Fannie Mae,' first recorded by blues artist Buster Brown in 1959, Tommy Tucker’s ‘Hi Heel Sneakers’ and Bo Diddley’s ‘Cops And Robbers.' There's also the chance to hear vibrantly live radio renditions of such early Jagger-Richards co-writes as ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,' ‘The Last Time’ and ‘The Spider And The Fly.'

More than 50 years after they were recorded, the tapes have been through an “audio source separation” process at Abbey Road Studios in London, to rebalance and remix the source material into a fuller sound.

Just the barest details are in Universal's initial solicitation for the above release. We're awaiting the pre-order links in the first post to become active, and there might be a video format down the line too.

Also make note of the companion hardcover book which was published in September:

I'm definitely looking forward to this. I finished the book yesterday. To put it as nicely as possible, it was disappointing, very disappointing.

It dealt too much with commonly known facts about the band that had nothing to do with their on-air appearances. Much if not most or more of it was a cut and paste job. I got very little new information by reading this book.

If it's BBC then it's really old recordings from the 60s I would guess, lots of Little Red Rooster.

I'm sure the tracks from the GRRR! uber-deluxe will be included.

Not my favorite era of Stones and I'll have to look at the track listing.

I expect loads of Blues and R&B covers.

It can't be a complete BBC set and also include much else. The "Beat Beat Beat at the Beeb" bootleg is two discs. From the mention of the Let it Bleed in the companion book description, I assume it is a curated selection of radio tracks rather than an complete set of radio appearances.

This is an important, welcome addition to the Stones archival catalogue. True to form, this is coming out 23 years after the Beatles saw fit to release some of their BBC sessions.

Are The Stones the only major band of that era to have no BBC release (until now)?

As far as I know, yes, even if some of the others have only released BBC shows on larger compilations: Bob Dylan (Cutting Edge download), Faces (Five Guys Walk into a Bar), Pink Floyd (the Early Years), etc.

I think the Animals still lack a proper BBC release, so if you count them as a major band, then The Stones are merely second to last.

The 2CD is a no-brainer - I wonder if the price will come down further.

My only criticism is that the songs aren't in chronological order.

*exhales* I don't believe it...this is that one vault title for which I've been waiting patiently for roughly half of my life. (Even the official release of the "Rock And Roll Circus" has been commercially available for nearly two decades now--it celebrates its twentieth anniversary next week.) I don't think there's anything else left on my vault wishlist!

My enthusiasm for keeping up with the Stones reissues waned about the time of the "Some Girls" reissue, and I always intended to jump back on their catalog again someday. This looks awesome.

I just looked at the inflation calculator to see how much a $30 import CD copy of any random "Ultra Rare Trax" volume would cost in 2017 dollars; the answer is $53.34. There is truly no better time to be a CD collector than the present!

My Beat Beat Beat At The BEEB and Get Satisfaction ... If You Want! boots satisfy my need for these BBC recordings. And, of course, it saves me $$$ to spend on other titles!!

All of this "demixing" stuff (aka high tech fake stereo) is making me nervous, as is the muddy, reverby sound of the sample clip. I will reserve judgment pending the actual release, but it is likely that the bootlegs will remain definitive.
