Ace's Songwriter Series continues to pay tribute to the most eminent tunesmiths of the 20th Century. This month they bring you our salute to one of the UK's highest profile singer-songwriters, with more than 50 years of hits under his belt Graham Gouldman. Listen People offers an overview of almost half a century of great British songwriting, from Graham's early 60s songs for his own first group the Mockingbirds, to his 21st century collaborations with Kirsty MacColl and McFly. Just about all of Graham's best-known songs are included, many of them performed by singers and groups with whom he has long been associated such as the Hollies, Herman's Hermits, the Yardbirds and both Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. As is the norm with Ace's Songwriter Series, all-time hits and unfairly obscure classics sit comfortably together for your listening pleasure. Also included are great selections from several groups of which Graham has been a member including Wax his 80s collaboration with Andrew Gold the obscure High Society and, naturally, 10cc. Graham's songs have been interpreted by artists as diverse as Larry Williams & Johnny Watson, Rush, Cher and Morrissey all of whom are also featured. Graham is still writing and still touring. Many of the songs included here are featured in his sets to this day. This compilation of many of his most eminent copyrights comes to you with the full approval of the man himself.

I am all over this. I seriously hope Ace one day gets around to a Teddy Randazzo songwriter/producer series.

Since it's a public post, I think it's OK to share-

First album spin of 2018 for me is this Ace comp of one of my favorite songwriters: Graham Gouldman. I bought it with my own money as the kids used to say, so I am entitled to a review.

Unfortunately, I am apalled at the sound quality of several songs taken quite obviously from scratchy records: “Look Through Any Window” by Gary Lewis & “I’m Gonna Take You There” by Dave Berry.

The sad truth of the digital revolution is that so many labels now feel it surplus to their priorities to get transfers from tapes to use on their releases. The owners make it difficult to access the tapes and prohibitively expensive to copy them. Storage companies like Iron Mountain encourage the labels to stash away their tapes forever, and few archival digs are even possible.

The all you can eat music model of infinite inventory and diminished value of art and artists saddens me.

Damn. I was looking forward to this one too.

I enjoyed it. Can't say I have the discerning audiophile's ear though. Some of the songs I loved growing up sounded best on my parents' car radio.
