Joe Satriani Recruits Glenn Hughes and Chad Smith for New ‘What Happens Next’ Album
Joe Satriani has completed his 16th solo album, titled What Happens Next, and is now prepping for another string of shows on the G3 Tour.
What Happens Next, which is due on Jan. 12, finds guitarist Satriani recording with bassist Glenn Hughes (from Deep Purple and the recently reunited Black Country Communion), and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, who also plays with Satriani in Chickenfoot.
The latest G3 dates will feature Dream Theater‘s John Petrucci and Def Leppard‘s Phil Collen. You can find the album’s track listing, as well as G3 tour dates, below.
“I could say that I’m surprised at the durability of G3 and how much it’s grown, but in a way I’m not,” Satriani said in a press release. “I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s wild, it’s everything you could want in a show.”
A new documentary on Satriani, Beyond the Supernova, is set to debut at the Mill Valley Film Festival in October. The film, shot by Satriani’s son ZZ, followed the guitarist’s European and Asian tour in support of 2015’s Shockwave Supernova.
Joe Satriani, ‘What Happens Next’ Track Listing “Energy” “Catbot” “Thunder High on the Mountain” “Cherry Blossoms” “Righteous” “Smooth Soul” “Headrush” “Looper” “What Happens Next” “Super Funky Badass” “Invisible” “Forever And Ever”

I will be grabbing this, and also tix for the tour. I've seen Satch the last three or four times, since Mike Keneally's first tour w/him. No Mike/Bryan Beller/Marco Minnemann this time, but I've become a Joe fan. It'll also be my first G3 show.

I saw Satch on the "Blue Dream" tour and the last one.
This last one was kind of boring to me. I felt like he realized everyone was there for the wankfest, so every song he would hit that one note way up on the neck and just milk it forever. I used to love his stuff, but it just all sounded the same to me.
Living Colour on the other hand were excellent, even though Corey Glover was dressed like an old man.

I'll still get this - Satriani is one of those people whose stuff I automatically get as there's usually a few things I'm bound to enjoy on a given album.

I sort of felt the same when I saw him and I had quite a few of his albums in my collection. It was a case of you can only hear someone play a harmonic squeal so many times, it lacked variety.
