And he had a lot of projects past his heyday in the Me Decade.

M*A*S*H takes it for me, but The Player runs a very, very close second.

I was a huge O.C. and Stiggs fan and was excited to see the movie version....very disappointed. I was baffled by Popeye, but that might have been because I couldn't understand what Robin Williams was saying.

Nashville, closely followed by Gosford Park. Also a huge fan of McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

McCabe & Mrs Miller followed by Nashville.

Leonard Cohen on the soundtrack!

Popeye is a sentimental favorite.

But The Player kicks ass. I bought the criterion edition of that movie not long ago.

Prairie Home Companion has a laidback, dreamlike quality to it, and some nifty musical pieces by unlikely performers. Plus, Virginia Madsen is a vision in white in the movie.

And I, as well. They came out with Short Cuts after that, with a return collaboration of Altman and Tim Robbins. Which I also have. Short Cuts is the mult-character, large cast kind of movie he excels at (Nashville, Gosford Park etc.)

He certainly was on a streak with Short Cuts, The Player and Gosford Park! All excellent.

I liked the little bits of Short Cuts but it never felt cohesive enough to me.

I feel like he already did Short Cuts in Nashville, and was trying to repeat that feel over and over again in his career. It only really worked for me again in Gosford Park (because the hunting trip, locked room murder mystery unified all the disparate character stories into one structure). In Nashville it was the visit of the Loretta Lynn character and her return to the spotlight. But in Short Cuts it was . . . . the city getting sprayed with chemicals.

I don't believe I've ever seen Thieves Like Us or Secret Honor.
