'Yardbirds '68' includes "studio sketches," live recordings from New York City's Anderson Theater

The Yardbirds will unearth "studio sketches" and live recordings for a new Jimmy Page-produced double-LP compilation set, Yardbirds '68, out November 5th via the guitarist's website.

The 18-track package, available now for pre-order, features eight rare studio recordings and 10 live tracks recorded at New York City's Anderson Theater in March 1968. The set is available in three formats: CD, vinyl and a deluxe box set signed by Yardbirds alumni Page, Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja. The former bandmates assembled the collection's sleeve notes, with Page and Dreja providing booklet photos.

"We thought this might be lost forever, but we've rediscovered it, re-mixed it," the trio said of the project in a statement. "It's of great historical importance. We're delighted to see the release."

Live at Anderson Theater blends covers (including Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man") and original tunes (like the band's early psych-rock tracks "Shapes of Things" and "Over Under Sideways Down"). Also featured are two songs Page later re-recorded with Led Zeppelin: "Dazed and Confused" and his solo raga-rock instrumental "White Summer." (In 1971, Epic Records released a similar collection, Live Yardbirds: Featuring Jimmy Page, which documented the Anderson Theater concert.)

The "studio sketches" on Yardbirds '68 are highlighted by two takes on "Spanish Blood" (including an instrumental version) and Page's folk-rock tune "Knowing That I'm Losing You," later reworked by Led Zeppelin on 1970's Led Zeppelin III.

Hard to believe that there won't be a general release. As with all "website exclusives", I'm concerned about this being on CD-R.

It appears at first glance to have everything, the live stuff and the Cumular Limit studio material.

I'm also wondering if their will be enough of an improvement in sound to justify what would basically be my 3rd purchase of the Epic (CBS) "Live Yardbirds".

This looks great! I am very interested in this!

Amazon USA has an import price, and the UK listing hasn't gone live yet, so it remains to be seen if general availability will be as a proper British release or just in Japan. Stay tuned. (I'll add these links to the first post as well.)

The sound quality would have to be vastly improved on the Live Yardbirds cd of a few years ago for me to spend money on this.

It's crap that the vocals are being removed from "Knowing That I'm Losing You" to keep the Relf estate from getting any royalties he deserved.

Bullshit move by Jimmy Page, who continues to be one of the bigger scumbags in rock music.

Jim McCarty said so on his facebook page several months ago, ugh...

Same here. This is a major WTF moment.

That would seem to be the case. Page has always been a rip off financially (all the uncredited Chess blues coves), but this (if true) is beyond belief.

The Vocals are indeed wiped from this release.

Get the last version. Though Page said it was a bootleg, it looked & sounded official so it's good enough.

I finally picked up a copy of this one. I must say the live disc is absolutely stunning! I was amazed how good it sounded cleaned up without the fake applause and a few minor tweaks.

The studio disc is a little disappointing, nice to have, but I'll stick with my copy of Cumular Limits. This is definitely a must own for Yardbirds fans!

Are the vocals wiped?

Yes, they did wipe Keith Relf's vocals off of Tangerine and tweaked Jim McCarty's vocals on Spanish Blood. That is the reason I kept Cumular Limits - That being said, the live show is so much better sonically, it is definitely worth it if you are a Yardbirds fan.
