I'd love this, but $160 is so far out of my range.

I will be getting this. I would also like UMe to release the 4 CD MOFO set to general retail. It's the only official release I don't have.

Now removed from HMV site, but added to Amazon in Japan:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0756BBL86/

still can't make out much...

I hit the https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0756BBL86/ page with the Chrome translator. All I could get of use was:

1. 4000 yen
2. 3 cd's
3. Release date 10/6/17
4. It is an "import" (i.e. NOT a Japan pressing)

Two editions of Halloween 77 have appeared at Amazon Canada, both now linked in the first post -- a "Costume Boxed Set" and a 3CD set of highlights are scheduled for release on October 13th.

There are also rumors of an un-named December Zappa release.
I am hoping for a complete Hot Rats box.

If the "costume Box" is the complete 6 shows, Amazon Canada is coming out to $92+ US including shipping.

That originally came from Adrian Belew

This was written on Adrian Belew's Facebook page.

"and multi-tasking on the plane by writing liner notes for a new Zappa release.
oh, I should have mentioned it a new box set all 6 shows from halloween at the palladium in new york, 1978. 18 hours worth!
it's the shows the Baby Snakes movie was made from."

It is likely that Adrian Belew got the year wrong and that the box will be from 1977 ?

quote from Zappateers

Could be that was the plan.
Still? who knows.
Remember originally the Roxy release was going to be a box of all of those shows - got something less - still great in quality just not the quantity they originally said.

Here is the scoop

3 cd set - entire 10/31/77 show plus select tracks from the 5 other shows.
The Box Set
6 shows from the vault masters on USB stick in 24 bit WAV audio with 32 page digital booklet - Zappa Halloween mask & costume.

So can any ICER's tell an old fart exactly what that means?

Usually, they wouldn't bother with 24 bit unless the sound is really good. Their are exceptions, though. Wav rather than flac is interesting. Some audiophiles feel flac isn't truly lossless & prefer larger wav files. My gear isn't good enough to hear a conclusive difference.

The question for me is what is the price & just how many "cd" (equivalent to) are included?

That means the box isn't giving you the music on CDs, just on a memory stick. But at least you get the mask and costume.

I'm sure you'll be able to burn these to a CD (and they'll be lossless, being WAVs), but they'll have to be converted to 16-bit (the disc burning program should do that for you).

Correct. Most cheaper converting programs wil lose a bit of sound quality (even as compared to straight 16 bit).

Can anyone clarify for me exactly how many cd equivalent's the USB box has & the price?

Both editions have vanished from Amazon Canada, so now we wait for them to reappear.

I expected 18 discs

The shows clocked it at

130 Min
140 Min
135 Min
150 Min
180 Min
180 Min
I can't imagine them putting parts of different shows on the cds.

So 18 discs for $ 100 - does not compute - unless you put them on a stick.

Can that amount of time 915 minutes plus contents of a 32 page booklet fit on a stick?

Exactly? No. I found a tour doc that shows each show was about two hours at minimum, up to three hours. So, I'd guess three discs per show on average, assuming you don't overlap multiple shows onto a disc.

They can stick the stick.

I'll get the 3CD set.

Yes. USB "sticks" go up to 256 gb. a 2 hour 24 bit wave show might be 2-4 gb ea. I'm still surprised they're not doing flac to save room.

Is the sound quality better than if they sold a digital download?

24 bit is definitely better than 16 (as long as you have a true 24 bit dac or soundcard). A flash drive is no better or no worse then a download (unless the flash drive is a bad brand; either way you may want to back the flash drive up to a hard drive at this price, as flash drive quality is going downhill these days; I've even had 2 Corsairs go bad this year). A small # of people feel that wav is better than flac. I am undecided on that one.

Bottom line is if you have a true 24 bit playback system, the flash drive in 24 bit will destroy any cd as far as sound quality.
