Description
Spirit was an American rock band founded in 1967 and based in Los Angeles, California. They are best known for their albums Spirit, The Family That Plays Together, Clear, and Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. Time Circle (1968-1972), released in 1991, was a compilation that draws heavily from these four albums. The album also includes some outtakes and versions of songs from then unreleased soundtrack work. At the time that this album was released, Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus was the only studio album by the original band still available. Several of the outtakes were later included on the 1996 reissues of the first four albums. The remixes of the tracks on The Family That Plays Together (necessitated because the master mix was lost shortly after the album's release) are different from the 1996 re-release.

This is an awesome comp (I have the USA edition). I am very curious re: the remaster. Floating World isn't known for tremendous sound quality; they tend to specialize in obscure vault releases from 60's & early 70's artists; often in official bootleg quality.

Also, most (NOT ALL) of what's on here is on the 4 original expanded studio albums. And I seem to be committed in my mind to buying all 4 of the AF SACD's, though I was pretty disappointed with the first 2.

If anyone is able to do a comparison between this & the USA CBS issue, I'd be interested in what you hear.

If you don't have any Spirit & cd is your preferred format, I would highly recommend at least the original USA edition of this.

I never knew that this one went out of print to begin with. Such a great comp!

I wasn't aware of that until I read your post! Looks like Amazon 3rd parties have it new from $6.53

Linda, are you certain this is a remaster & not just a straight reissue?

All of Floating World's releases are solicited as remasters. (They actually come out branded under a few different imprint names -- this will probably be on Retroworld.) In my experience, Floating World's remastering is like BGO's, what might be best described as "perfunctory". It's usually good enough, but almost never amazing. So if you already have an earlier pressing of this that you're happy with, you probably won't need to buy the new one. Buy this only if you don't already own it.

My experience with BGO vs F.W. has been different than yours. While some of BGO's remasters suck, I've found some to be an upgrade.

I am aware that FW uses several names. Thanks for the suggestion on keeping the original.

I'm keeping my original. Heard a cover of "Fresh Garbage" over the weekend and told myself I really need to listen to some Spirit soon. It's been too long.

FYi

jay ferguson does all the music for NCIS - LA.

all of his solo albums are decent, nothing spectacular, but all of them are a nice listen.
