Dusty Springfield's 1970 album "A Brand New Me" has just been reissued on Real Gone Music with the sub-title "The Complete Philadelphia Sessions," featuring 7 additional tracks.

The big news is that most all of the songs have been extended by about 30 seconds each!

What a concept for a reissue program, and a chance for the record companies to squeeze us for more cash.

I put it to YOU, which albums should be reissued with EXTENDED TRACK LENGTHS for each song?

Ready? GO!!

i have always always always wanted the stills-young band's album final song "guardian angle", with its outstanding duel guitars in the outro, to go on for about 30 minutes.

I guess that means that these Dusty songs were originally "fade-outs" and now they let the track run out to the end, or at least a longer fade.

This would probably be possible mainly on pop songs that were edited for radio play, although I guess we might see some album tracks that were shortened just because you couldn't fit more than about 20 minutes to an LP side. I've heard "extended mixes" of 80's songs that just increased the length of the end fade out by 20 seconds.

Now if they re-released a track with a whole extra verse that had been cut out, I'd go for that, but just a longer ending? I dunno...

This happened last year with the most recent posthumous Jeff Buckley album, You and I: less than six months after its initial commercial release, a "streaming-only" Extended Edition including longer versions of several songs appeared on Spotify, Apple Music, and other services.

Click for full size

The Buckley estate has suggested additional material from the same sessions will be released in the next couple of years, but to date the Extended Edition has not been made available for sale/download.

Having recently picked up ELP's Love Beach, I felt a few of the songs seemed to fade out too early. But I'm sure there would be no big revelation if the tape kept rolling.

Bluebird on Buffalo Springfield's 2 LP best of is the only place to get the (inferior) extended version. It's never been released on cd.

Every song that I like should be released with a longer timing. More is better!

I've always wished that the Stones' "Time Waits for No One" went on for another half hour or so. Seems like Mick Taylor was tapping into an epic groove when the song fades out.

The more music the better.
IMO it would make both versions essential.

Tunes like Willie the Pimp, the Gumbo Variations, Don't You Ever Wash That Thing and Watermelon could go on for hours IMO.
One of my favorite Zappa tunes T'mershi Dween only clocks in a under a minute...way too short.

Kiss should re-release Hotter Than Hell and include the 15 minute drum solo that Peter Criss recorded to be part of Strange Ways....

....or maybe not.

His guitar sound in those last few seconds of the fade is sublime. What's really frustrating for me is that the best sounding version I have is on the original Sucking In The 70s vinyl, where the song is faded even earlier (by 2 minutes, I think!).

Ozzy's "Diary Of A Madman". There's a guitar solo on the outro of "Tonight" that sounds like it's really starting to take off. Rumor was that the 30th anniversary edition was going to have the extended solo, but it ended up being cut.

I won't name any particular artists but I can think of a few where I'd pay extra to get tracks that were shortened by a minute or two.

Great point, Glenn. I've mentioned so many times at my blog about albums that would be so much better with some judicious editing. Some 5-minute songs would be a lot more effective at 3 minutes. And then there were all those 79-minute CDs in the '90s that were long because they could be.

Would love to have an officially released copy of the original Billy Joel Cold Spring Harbor with longer versions of several songs. A fellow ICEer gave me an unofficial version a few years ago and it's now my go-to version.

Which reminds me, I do like the longer version of "Zanzibar" that popped up on Joel's My Life box, with the extended Freddie Hubbard solo. I'd be interested in hearing more outtakes/longer versions of rock songs that had special guests from the jazz world.

on the CSN box set they decided to include the long version of 'almost cut my hair" which has a very extended outro of guitars by stills and young, it is very good.

I also prefer Guinevere (Cassidy's Bass is amazing!) & Suite Judy Blue Eyes from the box; though on Suite I'd like to hear a mix with the drums from the box & the harmonies from Couch Album.

That was really great. I was absolutely wowed the first time that I heard that.

Hot Rats - The Gumbo Variations were about 5 minutes longer on cd than on the lp. Love both versions.

The Universal CD reissue from 2012 is the LP mix, with the shorter Gumbo Variations. All previous CDs had the remix. You are right- both versions are great- and necessary!
