I have had to keep a secret from my music friends ever since I first met him, but I now have permission to reveal to all of you that somebody that I've known for a little over 4 years is currently working on a book about how he started the old Trademark Of Quality label and kept it going.
It will be called Bootlegger: A Pig's Tale. It is by Dub Taylor. The cat was let out of the bag concerning Dub when Sony/Legacy released the The Complete Basement Tapes set from Bob Dylan late last year. He was mentioned in the liner notes.
Of what I can reveal to you is that there will be complete, detailed stories about the two most famous bootlegs of all-time. Bob Dylan-The Great White Wonder and The Rolling Stones-Live'r Than You'll Ever Be will be given the fullest documentation of how those artifacts came into existence. There will also be stories about other titles that came out while the label was in existence.
In the time I've known him, I've gotten to listen to some incredible tales. Some are hair-raising, some are downright hilarious and some are just so rooted in what we knew as the '60s and early '70s that you'll just nod in agreement. They will be included in the book. There will be great context explaining why Dub decided to go ahead and boldly go into uncharted waters with this foray.
As time goes on, I will keep you all informed on developments.

I must say , I am very interested in reading this when it does appear . The recording industry always made more of the negative aspect ( I.E. Lost sales , lack of artistic control ) rather the very positive aspect of bootlegging in satisfying a greater need for product than the industry wanted to provide . Not only that but it provide a way to keep an artist name before the public when a particular artist went into a period of relative inactivity ( Bob Dylan , Bruce Springsteen , ect ) .

It's still being worked on. That's all I can say right now. It will definitely be worth it when it comes out.

Saw that Dub was interviewed recently in Mojo regarding Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series . No mention on the upcoming book though.

I enjoyed Clinton Heylin's book "Bootleg" and I'm looking forward to getting this one, too.

Heylin's book was a great read . I just hope we do see this book come to fruitation . Should be fascinating to say the least .

It's still got a long way to go. It is continuing to be worked on. I will pop in when it's either completed or if it hits a brick wall.
