I've been thinking about and listening to Pet Sounds after the discussion of it in the Neil Young Hitchhiker thread, and I thought about something that I've never seen discussed when this album comes up -- the use of the bass harmonica. Innovative and unique, for sure. But for me, not having heard the album until years after its release, that bass harmonica always sounds comical to me, probably because because it always reminds me of the theme music to Green Acres and Sanford and Son (TV series). I think it's actually been something of an obstacle for me in taking this album really seriously. I know Pet Sounds predates the TV themes, but it's easy for me to hear songs like I Know There's An Answer as the soundtrack to some lost episode of Green Acres.

Actually, it turns out the first episode of Green Acres ran in '65, before Pet Sounds was released.

Like the best songwriters, Wilson drew from all over. If the Green Acres theme song was an influence, he at least drew from one of the best TV themes of all-time.

Green acres is the place to be
Farm living is the life for me
Land spreading out,
so far and wide
Keep Manhattan,
just give me that countryside.

Sounds like something Wilson could have written.
