Herb claims to be a lucky guy, but we are the beneficiaries of his "luck". I've always been a fan of Herb Alpert's music, and his work inspired me to play the trumpet. Having said that, his last several albums have been among his best. Playing the trumpet is very demanding, and you can usually tell when an older guy is playing by the tone. It tends to be a fuzzy sound with less-distinctive articulation. Herb has avoided that pitfall and is still a very creative guy, looking for new sounds and approaches. We are so lucky to have him and apparently quite a bit more new music on the horizon. (Thanks for the heads-up, Linda.)
