Thank God I can finally get a Monkees comp! The market's been begging for this void to be filled for years!
Seriously, though, at least this one's got a little different track listing than the usual hits collections. If I find it fairly cheap I may add it to my collection. I think I already have over ten greatest hits comps by them.

having been alive, and quite aware of my surroundings and the world, i can say with 100% conviction:
the monkees had absolutely nothing to do with the summer of love.

i don't think i'll ever figure out the monkees.
they were, for lack of a better word, an act. an ensemble TV cast, known around the world for the TV show. they were entertaining, at best.
they tried to be a "real" band, and didn't do too bad of a job at all. but the admiration that they get just astounds me, and that admiration actually comes form people whose comments and ideas i respect about music. blows my mind.
however, when people talk about them like they were one of the all-time greats of rock and roll i just can't believe that they actually feel that way. and if, and i mean this with all my heart, they would ever get into the rock hall, i will cease all acknowledgement of the institution as it exists.
sorry if i offend anyone, but i had to say it

sorry if i offend anyone, but i had to say it I actually love them. I have over 50 CDs by them (not bad for a band that put out 12 albums) because they recorded great songs by some of the greatest songwriters of the time, with some of the best musicians on the planet (Wrecking Crew). I think Mickey was a terrific vocalist- he really knew how to put a song across, which I think has to do with his acting background. I enjoy hearing the different mixes and alternate versions, which is how I wound up with so many discs. But I agree with you 100% that they were not hall of fame, all-time greats. They were a product created by a corporation and despite the "we are a real group" attempt, they weren't a real group. They put out enjoyable pop and my nostalgia contributes a lot to my enjoyment. I admit it, and I have no trouble separating my enjoyment from their actual accomplishments. (I won't get into the Rock Hall of Fame, other than to say it is something I can't take seriously. The arguments on-line over who gets in and who is left out are something I don't understand at all. )

sorry if i offend anyone, but i had to say it No offense taken, but I do think The Monkees belong in the hall of fame. Certainly ahead of any rap acts, who, in my opinion, don't belong there. They may not have started off as a band in the traditional sense, but became one. No one begrudges any of the Doo Wop/vocal groups (who didn't write their own songs or play instruments) their inclusion into the hall of fame. renny, you're entitled to your opinion and I respect that, but I couldn't disagree with you more on this one.

I have enjoyed The Monkees immensely. Loved their humor and music. Beatles dug them as well.

I like some of their songs but I agree, just don't understand the devotion to them but I guess it was the age you were when they hit big. I was too young during their heyday (I was 7) and by the time their tv show hit syndication I thought it was too silly. Even these days I just can't get thru an episode (the show was on Antenna TV). The way I felt when I was 12 (I'm guessing the show was shown in repeats by 1972), is the same I feel today, just way too silly.

Never liked a note of their music or the show.
The Rock Hall of Shame is a joke, so if they got in I wouldn't be shocked and I wouldn't care.

I think "Headquarters" is a really good and they learnt how to be a pretty decent garage band by this time, playing and writing this album on their own. The first two albums contain some great pop tunes written by the best writers in the business. Great session musicians also involved.

Some very good records were made by The Monkees, and , as mentioned, by others, they included great songwriters and wonderful session players. I admire them for working on becoming a real band and later playing on their own records. What I really don't get is when people comment on others feeling for musical acts as if the ones they admire are the only ones worth admiring.
These guys were a lot of fun and many people enjoyed their records, TV show and stage act. God bless 'em.
That said, I think this comp sucks, right down to the title.

That said, I think this comp sucks, right down to the title. assuming your post is aimed at me, and i get what you are saying, but i have to say to you that i like the music that the monkees made too, and my post stems from the fact that most of the music that made them popular was only sung by them, period. they did not write, play, produce, mix, or arrange a single note of any of it. and yes, they tried to make their own and it wasn't bad at all, kudos to them for trying. but kid bailey, do you really consider them to be one of the greats of all time in rock and roll? and that is the gist of my post, they were OK, a decent band once they were a band, but one of the best, sorry, i think not, and i do not mean to degrade your taste in music in any way, it is just the way it is in my feeble little rock and roll mind.

Awww, you beat me to my joke. I'm not a huge Monkees fan but I do respect them; LPs like Headquarters and Pisces, Aquarius are quite solid by any measure and enjoyable to fans of 60s rock/pop. I have no doubt their serious fans are as well-deserved as any bands'! (All that said, this compilation looks unnecessary).
