Description
Spirit's 1968 debut album spent more than six months on the Billboard album charts and received heavy airplay on underground FM radio. Their music was part of the core, essence, and heartbeat of the the hippie, psychedelic, counter culture movement. The album is timeless, as fresh today as when it first appeared.

The band could play more styles than almost any other group. On Spirit they unveiled a mélange of rock, jazz, blues, folk-rock, and even a bit of classical and Indian music. The music is experimental. The vocals flow as easily as the instrumentals. Spirit struck a careful balance between disciplined studio chops, jazz improvisation, and driving rock and roll. Guitar prodigy Randy California is a clear standout, but the other band members are superb as well; John Locke's shimmering keyboards, Mark Andes' subsonic wall of bass, and Ed Cassidy's precision drumming. Big credit has to go to lead singer Jay Fergusson, whose phrasing is always just right with a wonderful spontaneous feel. The Marty Paich string arrangements are sublime.

The songs tackled unusual lyrical themes, like "Fresh Garbage" and "Mechanical World" while "Uncle Jack" showed some solid psych-pop instincts. And, it has long been debated if Led Zeppelin lifted the opening guitar lines of Spirit's "Taurus" for their own much more famous "Stairway to Heaven."

This is an essential album if ever there was one, and it would prove impossible to trace any musical time line without the inclusion of Spirit, and in particular, this body of work.

Amazon's listing page currently shows the artist as Checkfield (they made a jazz-fusion album called Spirit in 1983), but that's an error which will be corrected -- this release is going to be the self-titled 1968 album by the group Spirit.

Randy California's Captain Copter just came out as a hi-res download this week. Hopefully they'll do the entire CBS core catalog (the 1st 4 albums) & live at The Rainbow.

To me those 5 (The CS & Rainbow) are the absolute essentials.

The bonus tracks are identical to the last remastering from Epic/Legacy that I am aware of on 1996.

This has always been my favorite Spirit album - even had the original vinyl from 1968...can't wait for this one...!

That's what I had guessed on the bonus trax; I didn't bother to look.

Nice that they're giving AF the bonus trax, they usually don't.

There is a rumor that Audio Fidelity will be releasing the first four albums. Steve Hoffman said details will be released soon, so it appears to be legit.

I need to get my wallet ready. That's great news! Hopefully 1984 will be a bonus track on one of them.

Thanks given to Vic Anesini and Bob Irwin in that thread, I would love to hear their comments regarding these releases given they were the guys who did the great Sony discs.

I agree the Sony's were good; but unless Hoffman totally botches them the SACD's just about have to be much better due to the bit rate/sampling rate.

The Family That Plays Together is scheduled for June 23rd. Said to be 11 tracks; which if accurate would mean no bonus tracks on this one.

I just received a New Release e-mail from Spin.uk which shows a May 26th release date and says "five bonus tracks" which you can see on the label but they're too blurry to read.

By the way, being this thread is for just the first album, I don't know if there should be a separate new thread or just re-title this as a general discussion of all the reissues coming up.

First of all, the general release of the self-titled Spirit SACD (the one in the first post) has been pushed back to June 16th. I don't think there's ever been an Audio Fidelity release which actually came out on the originally-announced date. Get it here:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XYR8YCX/?tag=imwan-20

When there's a general release date listed at Amazon USA for the Audio Fidelity SACD of The Family That Plays Together, we'll make a separate thread for it. Until then, based on AF's history, it has to be treated as vapourware. Geff's date of June 23rd from the label, I guarantee won't hold true. Geof's date of May 26th from Spin likewise won't hold true.

Just passing along the info as I received it ... I love the early Spirit albums — the first is my favorite — but can't see spending $25-$30 on them again unless the sound is phenomenally better than the last remaster so I will await comments. I had to make the same decision on the Allan Holdsworth box; money's too tight right now, and how many times can I keep repurchasing the same album over and over?
