Quote: 'Aquaman' Screenwriter Diving in for Universal's 'The Creature From The Black Lagoon'
Aquaman screenwriter Will Beall is diving into new waters, penning The Creature From The Black Lagoon for Universal.
The project is part of Universal's growing monsters shared universe, which launches with The Mummy (June 9) starring Tom Cruise.
Chris Morgan and Alex Kurtzman are overseeing the monsters universe, which is based on the studio's vault of classic movies. Other potential films revolve around the characters of Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein and vampire hunter Van Helsing.
Beall wrote the screenplay for Warner Bros.’ DC project Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, which will be shooting soon in Australia. He previously wrote the script for Gangster Squad and is an executive producer and writer on the TV series Training Day.
He's repped by CAA and Management 360. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-v ... oon-990530

This sounds good. Anything with monsters will get my attention, and seeing the original movie in 3D as a kid (at a local independent cinema that always played old movies) is a favourite childhood memory of mine. It was the first 3D movie I ever saw and I loved it so much.

Out of all the classic monster movies this one would benefit the most from a modernized remake.

I've watched the original a few times but still have no lasting memory of it aprt from a few swimming scenes. I seem to remember reading an article when I was a kid talking about how the guy playing the gillman in the water had to hold his breath for all of the shots as there was no room or breathing equipment in the suit.

I think the thing about the Black Lagoon critter was that he wasn't based on a folkloric figure like a vampire, mummy, werewolf, etc. Even Dracula was a literary creation with a long history behind the character involving theatrical productions and movies dating back to the silent era - but the gill-man was a seemingly new idea. There have always been swamp monsters in folklore, but to make it a humanoid one was a fresh take on an old idea that had less to do with the supernatural and more to do with science-fiction.
