Two Limited Edition David Bowie Albums Due for Record Store Day

Click for full size

Parlophone Records is prepping two limited edition David Bowie albums for this year's Record Store Day. The never-released Cracked Actor (Live in Los Angeles 1974) and the Hunky Dory-era BOWPROMO will both hit shelves on Apr. 22.

Cracked Actor will come in a 3LP set and is, according to a release, "the first official release of this Philly Dogs Tour show from September 1974, some of which was featured in Alan Yentob’s BBC documentary, Cracked Actor. The full concert is documented on this triple vinyl five-sided album. The sixth side features an etching of the Diamond Dogs era Bowie logo."

All of the multi-track tapes for Cracked Actor were collected in November for the first time and mixed by longtime Bowie collaborator/producer Tony Visconti. The package comes with newly commissioned artwork featuring rare and unseen photos from the 1974 Universal Amphitheatre show by Terry O'Neill and Jamie Andrews. According to the statement, the Record Store Day release sounds much different from the 1974 David Live album, because it features a new band that included backup singer Luther Vandross, as well as guitarists Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar, pianist Mike Garson, sax player David Sanborn, conga player Pablo Rosario, bassist Doug Raunch and drummer Greg Errico.

BOWPROMO was originally pressed in a limited quantity in 1971 and it has alternate remixes of songs that would eventually appear on that year's Hunky Dory. The A-side has seven songs that were new at the time, five of which ended up on Hunky Dory, with five other songs on the B-side by singer Dana Gillespie.

Track listing for Cracked Actor:

Side 1:

Introduction
1984
Rebel Rebel
Moonage Daydream
Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing

Side 2:

FLOWERS IN THE DIRT—THE CASSETTE DEMOS WITH ELVIS COSTELLO

RECORD STORE DAY EXCLUSIVE 3-TRACK CASSETTE-ONLY RELEASE

With the 'Flowers In The Dirt' Archive Collection edition’s March 24th release date via MPL/Capitol/UMe fast approaching, Paul McCartney has confirmed a very special Record Store Day exclusive.

To commemorate Record Store Day this April 22nd, a limited edition three-song cassette of Paul and Elvis Costello's 'Flowers In The Dirt' demos will be made available at participating RSD stores.

The limited edition cassette-only release will be the first time these recordings— 'I Don’t Want To Confess', 'Shallow Grave' and 'Mistress And Maid'—will be made available in the same form as when Paul and Elvis first cut them directly to tape.

Speaking about these tracks Paul said: “The demos are red hot off the skillet and that’s why we wanted to include them on this boxed set. What’s great about these songs is that they’ve just been written. So there’s nothing more hot off the skillet as I say. So that was the kind of great instant thing about them. I hadn’t listened to them in ages but when I did I knew we had to put them out. We made a little tape of them and sent them to Elvis, who loved them too. We said we should put out an EP or something and now the moment’s finally arrived.”

The demos will be made available digitally only as part of the Deluxe Edition when 'Flowers In The Dirt' is released as the 10th installment in the multiple-GRAMMY-winning Paul McCartney Archive Collection.

The Paul McCartney Archive Collection release of 'Flowers In The Dirt' was, as always, personally curated and overseen by Paul himself.

Our thread for the full Flowers In The Dirt Archive Collection release can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=94155

I heard a test-pressing of The Geraldine Fibbers album and I have to say I was blown away. It's my all-time favorite album and I was thrilled to hear it on vinyl for the first time. But the actual sound exceeded my hopes for what vinyl could do.

Side four actually includes a NEW SONG. The first thing Carla, Bill, Nels, and Kevin have recorded in 20 years. And the rest of side four includes songs like an early version of You Doo Right (with Daniel and Nels) and studio versions of Bitter Honey and 234.

I wish Record Store Day was April 29th when we are in LA. Amoeba Records must be off the hook that day.

I have Bow Promo. It's very very good.

I Hope Cracked Actor comes out in digital format. Do be aware this is much more Philly Soul than David Live was. If you like Young Americans, you'll probably like Cracked.

How about offering music in multiple formats?
Yeah, yeah...production costs, distribution costs...blah,blah,blah.

Look, good music stores serve somewhat as a "special order" service. I inquired about a foreign DVD title at Waterloo Records in Austin, TX, and was surprised to receive a phone call the next day directing me to online sources as it would be too expensive for them to track it down and re-sell to me. I consider that GREAT customer service! BUT I will not go there for RSD because I detest vinyl as a format (not a judgement on anyone else--just not for me).

So why not offer a pre-sale for RSD-exclusive offerings in the buyer's format of choice? Take deposits. Require pick-up by end-of-weekend. Whatever.
For me, that would mean at least an additional two guaranteed trips to the store with almost guaranteed additional sales as I browse other offerings.

How does this not make sense?!? (I'm sure someone will let me know)

I don't detest vinyl; I've let it go completely due to storage & financial issues. If it wasn't for hi-res digital, I might not have made that decision. At this point, the only use I have for vinyl is if a given release is extremely brickwalled in all digital formats; as vinyl can not physically go much below DR 9 or 10 at worst.

Even then, my strong preference is a quality needle drop.

Once again the CD is dead as in its not cool anymore, its a 80s 90s technology that the hipsters (Record Store people) don't give a crap about.

Yep. Though if I was a vinyl fan, I'd be excited. Only items I've ever bought on RSD were cd's

I used to like RSD, But the problem is that every year there are fewer record stores in existence here in NYC, making the whole experience more difficult, since each store still gets very few copies of releases. There may be fewer stores, but there isn't a smaller demand!

The one release I am looking forward to, The Geraldine Fibbers album Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home, has been delayed until early May and will be available from the Jealous Butcher website and probably your trusted local vendors. Won't be part of RSD after all.

FYI

i was told at a record store today that the bowie set is not a very limited run at all. he said he could have gotten as many copies that he wanted, so, if you are buying it for the collectible reason, beware.

Thanx for the tip!

I hope they do a cd or hi-res download. If not, I suspect a needle drop will show up on the web.

As much as I like the sound of vinyl on a good turntable/cartridge/preamp combination, I no longer have a turntable & no longer buy vinyl.

I also wonder if this is the show that had a decent bootleg; to the extent it was even on a fake RCA records?

Re Bowpromo: there have been great needle drops of the entire lp (including the Gillespie side) in circulation for years.
