The comment about SACD confuses me a bit. Are they saying they down sampled the AF SACD or ?????

Notice the "SQ" encoding logo on the obi. I think the mangled English in the translation is saying that this is a 3CD set done from the original Japanese quadraphonic tape with DSD mastering, but it will take an SQ decoder to get all four channels out of it. Without the decoder these will play as 16/44 stereo CDs, although they should sound really good (and there's bonus material here too).

That would make sense. I never thought of putting SQ, QS, etc on a cd. Do you remember what frequency the subcarrier that carries the quad info on the vinyl was set at (as cd's won't go over 44k)? I do remember the #1 issue with Quad vinyl was that a worn needle could easily destroy the high frequency carrier that had the quad information.

This is a Hybrid SACD with 4.0 Quad Multichannel on the SACD layer. Several Jeff Beck releases over the past year have come out of Japan just like this. Here is the proper description:

This is the complete. Seven unreleased tracks, which had been sealed for 44 years long, are included in this set, and finally listed on the original order. These seven are: "Japan," "Bamble," "Ummu Uum," "Sacred Light," "The Creator Has A Master," "SAVER," and "Conga Solo" (about 35 minutes total).

Legendary engineer Tomoo Suzuki, who was responsible for recording & mixing of the original work, is responsible for mixing these seven tracks, using the original master tapes stored in Japan.

7-inch size mini LP (22 panel) faithfully replicates its original LP designed by Tadanori Yokoo, including original color photo(s), liner notes, and the original obi. Also includes reproductions of a Japan tour pamphlet and an Osaka concert ticket. Japanese original release.

That makes more sense; though Linda's idea is intriguing. I wonder if it is possible to put the SQ, QS, etc encoding signal on a cd. One would still have to find a 40+ year old decoder...........

While I don't plan to purchase either version; it also sucks that Hoffman & AF couldn't be bothered with the bonus trax.

I've never tried to do this myself, but supposedly the SQ-encoded tracks on The Electric Light Orchestra's The Early Years compilation -- a plain Red Book compact disc -- can be decoded into the original quad mixes with the right software (or a vintage receiver):

Why don't they simply remix it into 5.1?
