On CBS news this morning I heard a fiftieth anniversary re-release of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band will be out June 1. Here's the odd part: The re-release will include both Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane since the Beatles had intended for both songs to be a part of that album until EMI pulled the two songs for release as a 45. So did I mis-hear? Can anyone else confirm?

I've given this topic a full and proper Vaults title, trying to wish it into reality.
The news has been reported (or the rumours have been echoed, at least) by the UK's Times and Mirror.
Apple has been ridiculously provincial about not allowing bonus tracks on Beatles remasters. Adding "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" would be appropriate and I hope that it happens, along with a hi-res surround mix.

I respect your opinion Linda, but to me, that is just more Crapple bullshit. These two songs were released independently as single and were never on this album. Where will they be placed? After A Day In The Life? After The Sgt, Pepper Inner Groove? Somewhere in the middle of the album?
Using Crapple's logic, we should have had a Revolver re-release last year with Rain and Paperback Writer. Will we get The White Album next year with Hey Jude and Revolver?
Will Crapple remove these two songs from Magical Mystery Tour and we'll have another new album- "Magical Mystery Tour, The Undeluxe Edition"?
This sounds to me that Crapple is feeling adventurous and instead of going with their usual Beatle beach towels, bed linens and $500 pens, they're doing yet another in a long series of half-assed jobs. How about a Sgt. Pepper with a disc or two of alternate takes and/or significantly alternate mixes.

Yes, and while we're at it, George's "Only A Northern Song" was the first thing they recorded for Sgt. Peppers, even though it didn't see the light of day until they used it in the "Yellow" submarine movie. Maybe that one should be on there as well.

Geez--for decades, the mantra among the "serious" Bealtes aficianados is that one can ONLY appreciate the music of the Beatles when one experiences their music "as the Beatles intended", and that the UK releases in their original mono mixes are the only meaningful aural representation of the singular vision of George, John, Paul and Ringo, as these were the only mixes and releases releases over which they had ironclad control. Now it turns out that NOBODY outside of Abbey Road has ever actually heard the "Sgt. Pepper" album "as the Beatles inttended"? Say it ain't so!
On a serious note--I finally picked up the "Hollywood Bowl" CD and was surprised by how good they sounded--frankly, it struck me that they were playing better than they did on the live stuff heard on disc one of "Anthology 2", although my perception may be skewed by the fact that I've played "Anthology 2" so many times that any fresh live material is going to sound better to me.
(Which is why I don't get the Apple-bashing--they've released a bunch of Beatles vault material in the past 3-4 years. While I'm probably not going to buy this particular title, I've enjoyed the US mini-sleeves and "BBC Vol. 2".)

Joe, you state that you don't understand all of the Crapple bashing and you also mention The Hollywood Bowl release.
Beatle fans got a one disc compilation of the the 1964 and 1965 shows at that venue. Both shows would have fit onto 1 disc. I'd have been thrilled to have them both on either one or two. Bob Dylan fans got a box of 36 discs from his 1966 tour.

One thing I've always wanted to hear, after the documentary many years ago with George Martin at the control desk, are individual tracks of the SPLHCB songs. It's not my favorite Beatles album, but as far as interesting individual instrument parts, it's way up there. For example, the opening track, how cool would it be to just hear 2:02 of Harrison's guitar work, with nothing else getting in the way? A deluxe release along the lines of the Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds Sessions' is what I'm talking about.

I agree that Apple is usually full of worms.
This is what The Times says:
Quote:
In 1967 the record label EMI poached what John Lennon and Paul McCartney believed to be two of their best songs from the album and released them as a double A-side single, something George Martin, their producer, later described as "a truly terrible mistake".
Then they quote McCartney:
Quote:
We were then moving away from screaming girls’ gigs where no one could hear anything in the concert halls any more and were working on Sgt Pepper. John wrote this absolutely amazing song, Strawberry Fields Forever, for the new album and I was frankly a bit jealous, so I went home and wrote Penny Lane. It worked and we wanted them as the main tracks on Sgt Pepper.
It sounds like Apple is making a case for this version of Pepper being a restoration to The Beatles' original vision, where the two tracks aren't bonuses but belonged there in the first place.

Years ago I did my own Sgt Pepper, removing "She's Leaving Home" and "Within You.." and replacing them with Penny & Strawberry. Maybe not what was intended, but a much better listening experience for me.

it was always my understanding that those two aforementioned tracks were always intended as part of the SPLHCB album - the first 2 songs completed during those recording sessions and released as 7" - and are certainly lyrically and sonically cohesive. in an odd bit of affirmation, since having the original cd box set, i've made my personal copy for home and car to include those two tracks "penny land" and "strawberry fields forever" and nestled them in that order between sides one and two of the album. fits and flows quite nicely, in my humble opinion. it'll be interesting to see the upcoming song order.

i am truly amazed at the venom for putting those 2 songs on this CD.
i must qualify however.
as long as they are added at the beginning or the end i see nothing wrong with it. if they shove them in between somewhere, after 50 years, shame sham shame. (hear me fleetwood mac------'silver springs")
'strawberry fields' and 'penny lane' have each appeared on about 10 albums by now, what's one more, "it just doesn't matter" - as bll murray would say.

If they release this on blu-ray audio, similar to Pet Sounds (mono, stereo and 5.1), then this will be a wonderful releaese, further enhanced by the bonus tracks. If it's just a 50th Anniversary CD, then it's pointless.

If there is a true hi-res version (right now the best we have is the $300 24/44 USB stick) I'd buy it in an instant. I'd also be happy if they added the other 2 - 4 great songs from MMT! (MMT & I Am The Walrus; and possibly All You Need Is Love & Hello Goodbye) . Other than those 6 excellent songs there's nothing else I really like on MMT.

I guess, for me, I'd like for Paul and Ringo to decide where to place those two songs within the album.
I wouldn't want them at the end, after the "inner groove" - no fun that way.
I love every song on the album and would never want anything replaced. I think "She's Leaving Home" is monumental, but I'm so accustomed to the stereo version that the faster mono version is just odd to me.
I say "have fun with it", I can always listen to the traditional version any time I want.
