Description
Phil Collins pulls no punches—about himself, his life, or the ecstasy and heartbreak that’s inspired his music. In his much-awaited memoir, Not Dead Yet, he tells the story of his epic career, with an auspicious debut at age 11 in a crowd shot from the Beatles’ legendary film A Hard Day’s Night. A drummer since almost before he could walk, Collins received on the job training in the seedy, thrilling bars and clubs of 1960s swinging London before finally landing the drum seat in Genesis. Soon, he would step into the spotlight on vocals after the departure of Peter Gabriel and begin to stockpile the songs that would rocket him to international fame with the release of Face Value and “In the Air Tonight.” Whether he’s recalling jamming with Eric Clapton and Robert Plant, pulling together a big band fronted by Tony Bennett, or writing the music for Disney’s smash-hit animated Tarzan, Collins’s storytelling chops never waver. And of course he answers the pressing question on everyone’s mind: just what does “Sussudio” mean?

Not Dead Yet is Phil Collins’s candid, witty, unvarnished story of the songs and shows, the hits and pans, his marriages and divorces, the ascents to the top of the charts and into the tabloid headlines. As one of only three musicians to sell 100 million records both in a group and as a solo artist, Collins breathes rare air, but has never lost his touch at crafting songs from the heart that touch listeners around the globe. That same touch is on magnificent display here, especially as he unfolds his harrowing descent into darkness after his “official” retirement in 2007, and the profound, enduring love that helped save him. This is Phil Collins as you’ve always known him, but also as you’ve never heard him before.

Got this for Xmas. Just finished and it was pretty good. Most Genesis/Collins fans are aware of his history and it's not detailed extensively due to what most of us already know. This is deeper than that. Phil comes off as remorseful for the way he treated his ex-wives and not always being there for his kids. It delves deep into his alcohol abuse a few years ago. We nearly lost him during that period.

One thing is clear.... the man was/is a workaholic. He covers that period of the 80's where it seemed he never took time off.... which he didn't.

Just ordered this book since I am just now finishing "Testimony" by Robbie Robertson (which is a great book as well).

Looking forward to Phil Collins.

And to Mark's comment about the possible loss of Phil that is a true statement. I spoke with a client who was very, very close to Phil and during our conversation he clearly indicated his concern for his friend. His back pain was unbearable and he was self-medicating due to the physical pain and his remorse most likely with the failed marriages.

One of the best drummers of all-time, excellent singer and man who has given more than most bands do in a career.

It was also a time where Phil was supposedly retired and he found a lot of time on his hands. Not a good thing when you have a lot of problems (physical and emotional).

Yes, Phil is a monster to watch. Saw Genesis 3 times and Phil once solo (Seriously tour). All that, and he's a nice guy.

I got Rutherford's book and going to delve into as soon as I whip thru my latest copy of Readers Digestion. :ohyes:

I thought this was an excellent book, written very wittily yet honestly in first person. I don't feel like he held anything back, or sugarcoated anything from his past. I do, however, wish he went a little more in depth in the recording details of each album he was involved with, though I suppose that could be boring for a good percentage of the buying public (not to mention enough likely material for another book by itself).

What I found funny was the way Phil told his story using British slang words we Americans aren't used to. That added to the stories he told.
