If this is true that's very sad news indeed. He & Jaimoe laid down some incredible grooves over the years. I'm glad I got to see him live numerous times. RIP, Mr. Trucks.

Terrible. I was lucky to have once sat on stage with the Allman Brothers band and sat near Butch as he laid down the groove. A totally different perspective when you hear the music on the stage as it's being created. RIP.

I know there are music stars who have passed in the past 15 months or so than Butch Trucks, but this one really hurts. Maybe it's because there's no band that I've seen more than the Allmans I just loved the way that guy played. While not my favorite song the band, I'm playing "Mountain Jam" from "Eat A Peach" right now, since that's always a Trucks highlight. 33+ minutes of live instrumental joy, with a particular emphasis on the drums

I've read several reports that Butch Trucks shot himself in the head in front of his wife at their home in West Palm Beach. If this is true that makes his death even sadder & more tragic. Whatever demons he was battling, at least he's at rest now...and he didn't take anyone else with him.

Yes that does seem to be true. They say financial trouble but he remained a hard working drummer in a successful band for all those years so maybe he was bad with money? We may never know fully. Tragic end.

So very sad.
My prayers go out to his family as this must be especially hard.

Yes, this is true and it's horrible, but depression is so overwhelming for many people.
(hennemusic) The death of 69-year old legendary Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks at his home in West Palm Beach on January 24 was allegedly a suicide, according to media reports about the police records.
The Miami Herald reports the records show Trucks shot himself in the head with a pistol as his wife of 25 years - painter Melinda Trucks - stood near him and witnessed the incident in their downtown condo.
The media outlet has reviewed the transcripts of a frantic 911 call Melinda made to West Palm Beach Police about 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, telling the dispatcher her "husband just shot himself" with a pistol.
The drummer was still breathing when police arrived at the residence but passed away on site soon after. The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy Wednesday, but the results won't be known for weeks.
The Daily Mail suggests financial problems may have been a possible motive for Trucks to end his life.

It's sickening to watch someone take their own life. I saw that video a few weeks ago of that 12 yr old girl who hung herself and broadcast it via her phone.
Another personal case for me was a guy I used to work with. Nicest guy you'd ever want to meet or work with. Anyway, he had been struggling with alcoholism and been to rehab for it. He did good for several months and fell back into it. Five days before this last Xmas, he was at home, ten sheets to the wind. His wife came home and they started arguing. She finally said, "Whatever" and went to the kitchen to do her thing. A minute later, Jay blew his head off with his shotgun. Brain matter was all over the walls and Xmas tree/presents. Julie had to see the aftermath and then has to deal with that visual for the rest of her life, along with it being right before the holidays. She hasn't been back to that house since. Also, the people (business) that clean up after that kind of thing were there for 3 days before it was back to "normal."
Suicide is a bitch. Like my drill sergeants told us in boot camp, "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem"
Sorry for the gross story, but things have to be pointed out.

We had a terrible suicide this past Christmas on Long Island involving a female cop in one of the small village police departments. Just days before Christmas she killed herself with her gun in her patrol car. She leaves behind two small boys and a husband (who is NYPD). I just can't fathom a mother killing herself like that with two small boys who will have to live with that forever. But as they say, depression is a bitch.

When I interviewed Ronnie Montrose's widow for my second book, she told me of how things went down when Ronnie took his own life.
I won't repeat any of it, and it's not going in the book.
It was sad to listen to, and the people left behind deal with unimaginable pain.
However, the depression can be so overwhelming and consuming these people feel there is no other option.
One of my best friends just had her boyfriend commit suicide by hanging himself and she's been a mess.
Depression is real and it is awful.

A truly great band that has had far more than it's share of tragedy. RIP Butch and condolences to his family.
